Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank Governor raided private bank accounts – Mr Gono has just admitted to stealing other people’s money

Zimbabwe’s central bank governor Mr Gono has just admitted ‘stealing’ money from private accounts. Mr Gono admitted that he took money from the bank accounts of private businesses and foreign aid groups without permission to keep the country’s ministries running. But how do we know Mr Gono used all the money he took to finance government activities? How do we know the money was not used to finance Zanu Pf activities or shopping sprees abroad by government officials, whilst the majority of Zimbabweans were starving? But most importantly, should Mr Gono remain the reserve bank governor after admitting ‘stealing’ from private accounts.

In a statement, Mr Gono said he loaned the money from the private hard currency accounts to the government. He says the accounts will be reimbursed when the loans are repaid.

To quote from AP news report:

In the past two years, Gono slashed 25 zeros from the local currency, printed more local money without backup reserves or assets and distributed agricultural equipment to many in President Robert Mugabe’s party who were given farms seized from whites.

Gono declared Monday that the criticism of his office had reached “ridiculous dimensions … in the name of trying to show how evil, unworthy and incompetent the governor is.”

“All this is being done to in an effort to show the central bank governor killed the economy single-handedly,” his statement said. “It is even being argued in some circles donors must not put money into the Reserve Bank until the governor is relieved of his duties.”

After how Mr Gono has managed Zimbabwe’s finances, personally I’m not convinced he should be the governor of the Reserve Bank. Is it lawful for him to take other people’s money without their consent? In fact how can he say he borrowed from those private accounts? The right word is he ‘stole’ from those accounts.

Feel free to share your views on the raiding of private accounts by the Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank governor Mr Gono.
