Zimbabwe roads have turned into death traps – 8 people perish in a commuter omnibus accident

Eight people died on the spot and 9 others were seriously injured when a commuter omnibus crushed on the Mutare-Masvingo road on Friday morning. The commuter omnibus was on it’s way to Bikita from Masvingo.

Bad roads and unroadworthy vehicles have turned Zimbabwe’s roads into death traps.

Public transport operators must be forced to ensure their vehicles are road worthy. We all know how transport operators put passenger’s lives at risk because they are greedy….all they are interested in is money. People who come from Chihota would probably remember Modern Buses, probably had some of the worst maintained buses during that time. Recently the government withdrew the service permit for Mhunga Buses because the company had been involved in a number of accidents which killed innocent people.

Because of transport problems in Zimbabwe, commuters have no choice but to get on these ‘death machines’.

Corruption at the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) should be stamped out. Corrupt VID inspectors are equally to blame for the death of all these people on Zimbabwe’s roads.

Corrupt traffic police officers should not be left out of this….these are probably some of the most corrupt officers in the country.

The Unity Government should stamp out this corruption….zero tolerance to corruption will save people’s lives. The unfortunate part is that most of our politicians are also involved in the transport business in Zimbabwe…or these transport operators know some influential person in government.

People will continue to die in Zimbabwe as long as the government does not act on this corruption culture in the country.
