Zimbabwe News

Saturday 18 April, Zimbabwe celebrated 29 years of Independence from Britain. In Harare President Mugabe denounced violence and also called for the removal of sanctions. Indeed it was a special day, the first celebrations under the new unity government between Zanu Pf and the MDC. President Mugabe called for “national healing” and for all Zimbabweans to “treat one another with dignity and decency”. Well said Mr President….one united Zimbabwe for every Zimbabwean.

“As Zimbabweans, we need to create an environment of tolerance, and treat one another with dignity and decency, irrespective of age, gender, race, ethnicity, tribe, political or religious affiliation,” Mugabe said.

“This also means an end to those instances of violence that needlessly caused untold harm to several members of our society,” said Mugabe

These are the kind of words we expect from the President, but they should be matched with his actions. He has got the power and the necessary state resources to make sure we have a peaceful Zimbabwe.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also congratulated the people of Zimbabwe on their independence day and urged the country’s transition government to continue moving toward reforms.

She said Washington commended the efforts undertaken by Zimbabwe’s transitional government “and the progress it has achieved towards reforms that will benefit the Zimbabwean people”.

We are only a few months into the administration of the coalition government, and so far I think they are doing alright. Even though more can be done if everyone is fully committed to rebuilding Zimbabwe.
