Zimbabwe expected to be producing a million ounces of platinum per year

Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines president Victor Gapare says Zimbabwe is expected to be producing a million ounces of platinum a year in the next 15 years. According to a report in the Mining Weekly, Mr Gapare also revealed that the country is currently producing 170 000 ounces of platinum every year and there were good prospects for growth.

Mr Gapare said that the growth potential in Zimbabwe (which has the world’s second largest platinum reserves could see that figure increase sixfold.

He said that the developments of Zimplants and Mimosa operations were examples of the progress that could be made by the Zimbabwe mining industry in liberalised macroeconomic environment.

“When you get to Zimplants or Mimosa you think you are in a different country, because they are able to keep their money, they are able to invest money, and they are reaping the benefits,” Gapare said.
