Zimbabwe Elections 2008

As we slowly approach that all important day, March 29. The day when Zimbabweans go to the polls to elect the country’s’ next President, MPs, Senators and councilors. What exactly is the role or interests of foreign governments in Zimbabwe elections. Are they really interested in the welfare of Zimbabweans or they just want regime change?

It is okay for foreign governments to fund opposition parties in Zimbabwe, BUT when the government gives food to starving villagers in Uzumba, Lupane, Kezi or Marange we hear a lot of noise about a desperate party using food to buy votes and stay in power at all costs. Should people starve because giving them food will be seen as vote buying? Should all food distributions stop because it’s election time? Food distribution should be to everyone regardless of political affiliation. It doesn’t matter whether you are Ndebele, Shona, Kalanga or Zezuru the government has got a duty to every Zimbabwean.

So why should it be okay for foreign governments to fund opposition parties in Zimbabwe? Zimbabwe like all other countries has laws on funding of political parties, that’s why I find it a bit strange for the British government to openly say that it is funding Zimbabwean opposition parties which is against the law. So how does the British government justify funding of political parties in Zimbabwe? Surely there should be better uses for the British tax payers money!
So what would Peter Hain say about this? He was forced to quit after that political funding scandal.

Why is Britain so much interested about regime change in Zimbabwe? Why are they so much interested about who is elected the next President of Zimbabwe? Are they genuinely concerned about the welfare of the suffering Zimbabweans. Is Zimbabwe elections not a matter for Zimbabweans to decide? It is up to Zimbabweans to decide who they want to be the next President without outside interference. Foreign governments can play neutral observing role but not those who are interested parties in the game. Just wondering how the British government would react to the American government funding the Conservative Party’s’ election campaign.

We want FREE and FAIR elections but within the laws of the land. Which should also be free and fair to everybody.
