Zimbabwe Elections 2008

Like many other Zimbabwe economic refugees around the world. We can only wish, hope and pray since we are not allowed to exercise our right to choose the next president of our country. The final hour has arrived, in a few hours Zimbabwe goes to the polls to choose the next president. In what is seen as the most important election since independence in 1980.
Morgan Tsvangirayi, Simba Makoni and President Mugabe, they have all promised during their campaign rallies. Buses, tractors, diesel and many other things have been donated during this campaign period. But is it that the politicians just choose to ignore the real issues affecting the people? Here I will share with you some of the issues affecting Zimbabwe as the people choose the next leader of the country.

Thanks to technology, Zimbabweans can share messages of encouragement, messages of hope and discuss the real issues as we go to vote for the next president. Here is an extract from an email I got from a friend recently.

Kana mo voter murangarire izvi vadikani (remember this when you go to vote).

Tafara and Mabvuku have had no water, electricity or functional sewerage system for 7months. The whole sewerage system has collapsed and nobody is doing anything about it.
The lids on the manholes in the streets are lifting and raw human excrement is flowing in the streets – the stench in unbelievable.

The people have attempted to dig a type of canal so that the filth can flow into a pit which is full of sewerage. Their only source of water is a well which is about 10 feet away from this stinking pit.

42 people have died from diseases such as dysentery. Human excrement is flowing out of the resident’s toilets and into their back yards where they grow their vegetables. They can’t use their toilets any more because they can’t even open the door to get in and they can’t clean anything because they don’t have enough water.

In the picture on the right, what looks like paving stones is actually dried human excrement, 6 inches deep and they are growing their mealies in it.

Raw sewage is lying stagnant around the shops, butcheries and schools and vendors are selling fruit and vegetables in the midst of all this waste.

In the picture to the right, the people who live here cannot enter their premises through the front gate because of the sewerage blocking the entrance. They have to go next door and climb over the fence.
Really I’ve never been so disgusted in all my life. This a crime against humanity. Nobody should be expected to live in conditions like this. I think it needs to be exposed.

The only way is to go and vote and vote wisely.
