Zanu PF agrees to Morgan Tsvangirai becoming Prime Minister

In a positive development in the current Zimbabwe power-sharing talks between Zanu PF and the MDC, a senior Zanu PF party official has said that the party has agreed to have Morgan Tsvangirai as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. How much power he would have, is still under discussion.

President Mugabe could sign the deal on Sunday, and Zanu PF wants any government of national unity to last five years.

“There could be a signing tomorrow, after the leaders have met to thrash out the remaining issues,” the official said to Reuters.

Earlier Robert Mugabe’s spokesperson, George Charamba said Mugabe will meet Morgan Tsvangirai on Sunday to discuss forming a possible unity government. Charamba also said Arthur Mutambara, leader of the other breakaway MDC faction will also be involved in the talks.

The Zanu PF official said the breakthrough was reached when the MDC agreed to recognize Mugabe’s legitimacy as president.
