Words of advice to Tozivepi – Be careful when you go to Harare

Tozivepi – I regard this as one of the best and most informative songs to come out of Zimbabwe. Those who remember I’m sure they will agree with me. The song is about a parent giving advice to the son Tozivepi who was about to go to Harare in search of greener pastures (mafuro manyoro). During these days nobody talked about diaspora, life was in Harare.

Here is a bit of the lyrics from the song Tozivepi.

“Hona Tozivepi, mwanangu Tozivepi.
Ukaenda Harare, hona Tozivepi.
Ngwarira mwanangu, zvigashira vayeni.
Purezha yemo huchi hwe Gonera,
Purezha yemo huchi wegonera.

Kunakidzwa hakurambidzwe, kunoda vakashanda kare vane mariiiiii!
Purezha hairambidzwe, inoda vakashanda kare vane mariiii!

What do we learn from this song?

Wise words from the parent to the son about to go to Harare to look for employment. The advice is to be careful of the sweet and fast flowing life in the city, for if he is not careful Tozivepi will be swept away and consumed by the pleasures of Harare.

And today I believe this song applies very well to all those who have gone to the diaspora in search of a better life. Did you listen to what you parents told you before you left Zimbabwe going into the unknown?

How many of us have been consumed by the guilty pleasures of the Western World? There are so many cases of people who have lost it in the diaspora. If only they had listened to the kind of advice given to Tozivepi.
