Zimbabwe Elections 2008

Can someone stop this madness! The whole election process has lost it’s meaning and credibility. The Zimbabwe electoral commission has started a partial vote recount in 23 constituencies which is expected to last about three days. The outcome of the recount could change the previous announced results in which president Mugabe’s Zanu PF lost the majority in parliament to Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

In whose interest is this vote recount? Zimbabweans went to the polls on 29 March, but up to now the results of the presidential election have not been announced. Now this recount is going to delay the results even more.

The opposition MDC have already said they do not accept this recount. I doubt the majority of Zimbabweans accept this recount either. Most people seem to believe that the opposition MDC won the elections. Otherwise the results could have been announced a long time ago.

Whatever the outcome of this recount, the people of Zimbabwe made a statement on 29 March. Whether the peoples decision will be respected is another matter. Now it seems if need be, guns will be used on them so they accept whatever result will be announced after the recount.
