South African food retailer may buy businesses in Zimbabwe

South Africa’s biggest food retailer, Shoprite Holdings Ltd is reportedly interested in buying businesses in Zimbabwe to expand its operations. The Herald reported that the South African company is seeking a controlling stake in OK Zimbabwe Ltd, Zimbabwe’s second-biggest supermarket chain.

Responding to the Herald report, Shoprite said, they “will consider such opportunities in Zimbabwe if the economic conditions in the country prove to be conducive to the expansion of it’s operations,” Marketing Director Brian Weyers told Bloomberg.

Shoprite operates stores in a number of countries in Africa, and in Zimbabwe they have a shop in Bulawayo.
