Brian Dzingai, (left in the picture) finished third behind Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Christian Brendan of Antigua.
With the Beijing Olympics just days away, things are looking good for one of Zimbabwe's medal hopefuls, Brian Dzingai. He finished third in the man's 200m race at the Tsiklitiria Athens Grand Prix Meet in Greece.
Dzingai finished a credible third on a time of 20.45secs in a race won by Jamaican Usain Bolt in a blistering 19.75secs.
Hopefully our small group of athletes will give the country something to cheer about when the Olympic games start in Beijing, China.

Posted by KOGY | Friday, July 04, 2008 | Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »The big question is, Will sporting sanctions influence Mugabe?
With pressure mounting on Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe has finally agreed to withdraw from next year's Twenty20 World Cup to be held in England. The compromise allows Zimbabwe to retain it's International Cricket Council membership....and the funding that goes with it.
The announcement follows the England Cricket Board's decision last week to ban Zimbabwe from their scheduled one-day international tour next year.
The British government is likely to refuse visa for the Zimbabwe cricket team to take part in the ICC World Twenty20 as the international community steps up pressure on the Robert Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe.
There is no doubt the biggest losers are the cricket players. Banning Zimbabwe from the ICC Twenty20 will not influence Mugabe that much. But an pressure on the Mugabe regime is warranted.

Bhasera stars as Zimbabwe national team hold Guinea to a draw

Zimbabwe national football team 'The Warriors' put up an impressive performance against their West African opponents Guinea in a 2010 World Cup qualifying match in Conakry, Guinea on Sunday.
The Zimbabwe Warriors picked up a crucial away point against probably their toughest opponents in the group which also include Namibia and Kenya.
Man of the match, Onisimo Bhasera who plays for Kaiser Chiefs in South Africa gave a polished performance and was outstanding in attack and his defensive duties.
So impressive was Bhasera's performance that he is now tipped to leave South Africa and compete in the better leagues in Europe.
The Zimbabwe national team was very impressive that even after the game the local residents lined up the streets to cheer on the Warriors on their way to the hotel.
South Africa names 3 Zimbabweans in Spingbok squad

Three Zimbabwean born players, Tendai Mtawarira, Brian Mujati and Tonderai Chavhanga were named in the Springbok squad announced by SARU president Orega Hoskins for this summer's internationals.
The three players have been in fine form for their respective clubs and have been hugely impressive in this season's Super 14 competition. Tendai Mtawarira is said to be very popular with the fans down south.
The South African squad is preparing to face Wales in a two-test series in June and also face Italy in a one-off clash before they embark on the Tri-Nations campaign.
Zimbabwe's lose is South Africa's gain
Good luck to the guys and I wish them the best in their forth coming games. They got the chance to pursue their Rugby careers in South Africa. They now have a chance to showcase their talents on the international stage. The chance which has been deprived to so many talented Zimbabweans.
I'm always interested in what you have to say, feel free to post your comments.
Zimbabwe Champions Dynamos FC 'De Mbare' send Tunisia Champions packing

It had to be Dynamos once again flying the Zimbabwe flag high in Africa. Dynamos have proved once again to be the best football club in Zimbabwe by having more success where no other Zimbabwean club has. The Zimbabwe champions beat the current African Champions, Etoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia 1-0 to qualify for the mini league phase of the African Champions league.
Dynamos delivered the knock out blow of the weekend when they send the current African champions out of the competition before the group stage. Dynamos got the all important goal through winger Benjamin Marere to roll back those good old days and wild celebrations in Harare. Who would forget the scenes of 1998 when Dynamos went all the way to the finals of the African elite Club competition.
Dynamos participation in the game had been in doubt in the run up to the match because of Zimbabwe's new foreign currency restrictions. However Dynamos managed to overcome this at the last minute and only arrived in the coastal resort of Sousse in the early morning of the game.
Well done the boys in blue! Dynamos FC 'De Mbare' flying the Zimbabwe flag high in Africa.
Well done Kirsty Coventry!
Posted by KOGY | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 | Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »For the past two weeks I have been consumed by the circus of the Zimbabwe elections. I forgot to write about one Zimbabwean who is flying the Zimbabwe flag high. Four times the Zimbabwe national athem was played in Manchester, thanks to the efforts of Kirsty Coventry the swimming sensation from Zimbabwe. Kirsty won four gold medals at the recent world swimming championships in Manchester, England.
Zimbabwe finished fourth on the medals table ahead of other countries like Britain and Russia all because of Kirsty's efforts.
At the 2004 Athens olympics she won three medals, one gold, silver and a bronze medal. And at the coming Beijing olympics she will be carrying Zimbabwe's medal hopes again.
How I wish Zimbabwe could be making full use of the positive publicity she is creating for the country!
Congratulations to Kirsty Conventry and I wish her the best in her future competions.
Sadomba gets Millions of zimpapers as Dynamos FC beat Mozambique Champions
Posted by KOGY | Monday, March 24, 2008 | Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »Gone are the days when Zimbabwe footballers used to enjoy that celebrity status. Gone are the days when they used to live flashy lives. Those days they earned real money, at least it was paying to be a footballer. I never heard of supporters throwing millions of dollars to footballers, save for the few hooligans who attack players with coins.
Dynamos FC striker Edward Sadomba was showered with bank notes after scoring a hat-trick for the Zimbabwe champions against Mozambique champions Costa do Sol in a Africa Champions League game at Gwanzura Stadium.
Dynamos won 3-0 courtesy of the hat-trick by Sadomba in this first leg game at Gwanzura Stadium.
Last week Dynamos FC supporters threw about 800 million dollars to Leornard Tsipa after he was expelled in the Harare derby. Even for someone who has been shown a red card, these supporters still give money?
Can't help but feel sorry for Zimbabwe footballers WAG (wives and girlfriends). We can not even compare them to the English WAGs where it's more like a career.
Like many other Zimbabweans, football players are suffering from the effects of the collapsing economy.
UK government backs ban on Zimbabwe cricket tour!
Posted by KOGY | Tuesday, March 04, 2008 | Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »So the British government is still considering a ban on the Zimbabwe cricket tour!
I thought they have more serious issues to deal with in their own country than wasting time thinking of the Zimbabwe cricket tour.
According to the BBC's Inside Sport programme, the British government is still looking at options to stop next year's Zimbabwe cricket tour, including banning all Zimbabwean Sports men and women from competing in Britain.
What is the business of British politicians in sporting issues? They should concentrate on the political issues affecting their country and the British people. They should be dealing with the rising crime on the streets, all those teenagers killed on the streets of London every month. They should be talking about the MPs shredding important documents to hide their abuse of tax payers money. They should be talking about the economic problems facing their country, not wasting time on Zimbabwe cricket.
When are they going to stop trying to punish these young sports people for what they are not responsible for? Are they responsible for the economic problems in Zimbabwe? Are they responsible for the so called human rights abuses in the country? Are they responsible for the not so free and fair elections. These boys are not responsible for the current situation in the country and neither are they part of it. So they should be allowed to exercise their right to take part in international competitions. As do other members of the International Cricket Council.
So are they going to stop Benjani Mwaruwari from playing football for Manchester City? This is just crazy. In the townships we say "Stop this political nonsense Mr Brown". As for David Cameroon, he should be thinking about how to get to No 10 Downing Street. He should be talking about the real bread and butter issues affecting the British people rather than gain cheap political millage at the expense of Zimbabwe sports people.
Zimbabwe Football: Dynamos Fc vs Highlanders Again
Posted by KOGY | Wednesday, February 27, 2008 | Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »Still the best in Zimbabwe Football!
In the latest clash between the two giants of Zimbabwean football, Dynamos FC won 1-0at Gwanzura Stadium to complete a 2-1 aggregated win over Highlanders in the 2008Charity Shield Trophy.
Nestle Zimbabwe sponsored the competition to a record $190 billion this season. Both Dynamos and Highlanders were guaranteed $12.5 billion each in appearance fees. Nestle Zimbabwe paid tournament expenses for both teams including flying Dynamos FC to Bulawayo for the first leg, and Highlanders to Harare for the second leg at Gwanzura Stadium.
Like everything else in the country, the Zimbabwe football situation has also been greatly affected by the state of the economy. The cheapest ticket for the Charity Shield game was $20 million (less than £1). Even though not much in foreign currency, I wonder how many people can afford such gate fees.
On the other hand, I think the day to day running of the teams in the Zimbabwean league is greatly affected by this lack of funding of the game and also the falling value of the Zimbabwean dollar against other major currencies.
A few weeks back Dynamos FC was struggling to raise US$30 000 for their Champions League game in Swaziland. Now there are reports that Highlanders FC is also struggling to raise US$40 000.00 for their trip to Mozambique for their game game against Ferraviario de Nampula in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Highlanders lead 3-0 from their 1st leg victory at Barbourfields two weeks ago. God knows how they will get finance for the next rounds, if they win in this round.
Something positive about Zimbabwe Football
Posted by KOGY | Monday, January 21, 2008 | Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »Benjani has been in fine form this season where he is currently their top goal scorer with 12 goals. The Zimbabwe football captain has been in different form from last season where he struggled to score.
Benjani's goals finally ended Pompey's six-match goal drought at Fratton Park. Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp was full of praise for Banjani. Redknapp sad, "When he first came here two seasons ago he couldn't score to save his life but he's getting them now". " He is a smashing lad and all the fans love him".
The African Cup of Nations finally started in Ghana yesterday, the hosts opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Guinea. Once again Zimbabwe is absent from the continental showpiece. Zimbabwe always disappointment in international football even though we have had so many talented football players over the years.
Corrupt football administrators have contributed over the years in destroying the beautiful game of football in Zimbabwe. Like in most sectors of the economy, corruption is part of life at the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). Despite getting all the grants from FIFA for football development, no meaningful development ever happens in Zimbabwe football. All the money just end up in the pockets of the corrupt football leaders.
No wonder the country has got only Benjani Mwaruwari playing football in a top international league, while most of the players end up playing in South Africa. Most countries in Africa have players playing in the top leagues in Europe.
At least we have Benjani.
Should England ban Zimbabwe cricketers' 2009 tour?
Posted by KOGY | Saturday, January 05, 2008 | Mugabe, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe Sports | 2 comments »So, is the British government right to stop the Zimbabwe cricket tour? Personally I do not agree with these politicians interfering in sport. Cricket is cricket and these guys should be allowed to come and play cricket. The ICC should instead ban England and stop then from hosting the World Twenty20 event if they ban Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe is a member of the International cricket council and hence these guys should be allowed to take part. Whatever political problems that maybe there, is it in the best interests of the players to stop them from participating in international tournaments. Why should they be punished? Some of these guys earn their living from playing cricket, so why take it away from them?
A few years back Zimbabwe decided to pull out of the common wealth countries and this took away the only chance our sports person had of participating in international tournaments. They took away the chance for these guys to make a carrier for themselves.
There is no room for politicians in sport.
The rise of the giants of Zimbabwe football
Posted by KOGY | Monday, December 31, 2007 | Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe Sports | 0 comments »All the good and the bad of Zimbabwe football can be found at Dynamos FC. From the highly talented footballer to the most corrupt football administrators.
Being a community team formed out of Harare ghettos, Dynamos had a never ending supply of talent from the suburbs. It was a dream of every kid to play for them and follow the steps of great players like, Moses Chunga, George Shaya, David Mandigora, Tauya Mrewa and many other former players.
With all the great players, the club had a legacy of supplying the bulk of the best players to the Zimbabwe warriors (national team).
Dynamos is known to set the standard of good football, hence they are always the team to beat. There is a big rivalry between Dynamos and their smaller city neighbours CAPS FC, the big rivalry has seen many clashes between the two sets of supporters over the years. There is always pressure for the team to win and sometimes their supporters do not know how to deal with losing games and resort to violence.
As a community team, formed out of the ghetto with no major owner, the team relies on corporate sponsorship. Dynamos is a cash cow in Zimbabwe football. They generate the most revenue due to their large support base.
The perennial leadership wrangles at the club do not help the image of the club. There are reports of corruption and mismanagement every year at the club. Different factions fighting for the control of this big cash machine. Even ticket sellers know it's a big pay day if Dynamos is playing. There have been many cases of money being stolen through ticket sales, fake tickets have also been a common occurrence when Dynamos is involved. It seems everyone is after a piece of this big cake.
In some cases some have used the club to further their own political ambitions, taking advantage of the clubs huge support base.
Player unrest is another problem at Dynamos, corrupt management officials help themselves to the team's money without much concern for the players.
Supporters of other teams may not agree but Dynamos do set the standard in Zimbabwe football. They are the most supported team and generate the most revenue. Wish them luck in their next African Champions league adventures.
