Our President Cde Robert G Mugabe has confirmed that he will be attending the EU-Africa Union summit in Portugal. Should he or should he not attend, I think he should attend.
For the simple reason that he is a leader of an Africa country, Zimbabwe. If he does not attend then who is going to represent Zimbabwe? Is Zimbabwe not a member of the African Union. If Zimbabwe is going to benefit from the summit then we ought to be represented.
Plus the President was invited to the summit, wasn’t he? The summit is also not about Zimbabwe, even though issues relating to it will be discussed at the summit. That’s what the summit is for. Building better relations between Africa and Europe.
I agree we need to address the problems affecting Zimbabwe, but can this be achieved through isolating the country.
Can we be represented by Tsvangirai at this summit? NO, he is not the President and I doubt if he still got much to offer to the country.
So it is in the best interest of the country for the President to attend the summit, whether Gordon Brown attends or not.
