Dozens of armed riot police have raided the offices of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Reports from Harare say riot police detained about 100 MDC supporters. This is the biggest crackdown on the MDc since the elections held on 29 March, that the opposition MDC says it defeated president Mugabe. Zanu PF lost it’s majority in parliament to the opposition MDC for the first time in 28 years.
Nearly one month after the elections that were held on March 29, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has not released the results of the all important presidential election. Instead Mugabe’s Zanu PF party has called for a vote recount which is currently underway in 23 constituencies of which 21 were previously won by Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC. This is widely seen as an attempt by Zanu PF and Mugabe to cling to power by reversing the results previously announced to give Zanu PF the majority in parliament which it lost to the opposition MDC.
The delay in announcing the election results has caused tension, anxiety, stress and anger in Zimbabwean communities where people already know the results which were posted at various polling stations. Zanu PF supporters and government militias are said to be unleashing violence against opposition supporters in a move to make them vote for Zanu PF and Robert Mugabe in the event of the widely expected election re-run.
There are rumours that the election re-run will be held on the weekend of 24 May.
MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa said, “among those among those MDC supporters detained by the police are supporters fleeing violence in different parts of the country. They are said to have come to the party headquarters to seek protection, shelter and medical assistance.
But the police accuse some of these supporters of committing crime and then seeking refuge at the MDC headquarters.
