Norway gives more Aid to Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is to get more aid money from the government of Norway to help it’s people and support the new government of National Unity. However the money will not be channeled through the government financial system.

Due to years of corruption and financial mismanagement, the Zimbabwe government is not trusted by foreign donors and governments. Norway will give Zimbabwe $9 million which will be channelled through NGOs, the UN and the World Bank.

The money will be mainly for education and to improve health delivery in the country. Some of the money will also be used for food aid and also to support a World Bank multi-donor trust fund to support the rehabilitation process in the country.

“Zimbabwe has stared down into the abyss, but is determined to climb out of it. If the new government proves capable of functioning, Zimbabwe could become an example of a country that has avoided becoming a failed state. It is therefore important to support Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the new unity government to help the country rebuild,” said Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.

“When people who have risked their lives for democracy in Zimbabwe ask us to provide help, we have an obligation to do so. If we fail to support those who are fighting for change now, Zimbabwe could become a new Somalia. That is a chance neither Zimbabwe nor the rest of the world can take,” said Solheim.

We need all the help we can get to be able to rebuild the country and we appreciate the efforts of everyone who is working hard to help the people of Zimbabwe have a better life. The unity government needs all the help it can get, otherwise Zimbabweans will continue to suffer.
