Kombi crews (vana Hwindi) always think they are a law unto themselves and they can treat passengers in whatever way they want. But throwing a pregnant passengers off a moving Kombi, or any other passenger for that matter should not be condoned.
According to the Herald, A conductor and driver who allegedly pushed a pregnant woman out of a moving commuter omnibus yesterday appeared in court facing attempted murder charges.
The conductor, Regis Vito (23), and driver Ngonidzashe Masvika (28) were remanded in custody to April 9 when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Memory Chigwaza.
The duo were advised to apply for bail at the High Court because of the gravity of the case.
Prosecutor Ms Ropafadzai Majaja alleges that Masvika and Vito told passengers boarding their kombi at Mbare Musika that their last drop-off point was the commuter omnibus rank in Fourth Street.
It is the State’s case that when they got to the Speke Avenue bus terminus along Chinhoyi Street (popularly referred to as Copacabana), the two ordered all passengers out saying they had reached their destination.
At that point, it is alleged, Chipo Puwayi Nyamadzawo refused to disembark insisting she had parted with her money on the strength that she would be dropped off at Fourth Street and not Copacabana.
Nyamadzawo, who was nine months pregnant at the time, told the duo that she could not walk all the way to Fourth Street due to her condition.
It is alleged Masvika started the commuter omnibus engine while Nyamadzawo resisted attempts by Vito to push her out of the moving vehicle by holding on to the door.
Masvika accelerated, forcing Nyamadzawo to lose her grip leading to her falling face down, it is alleged.
The duo sped off, leaving Nyamadzawo lying injured, the court heard.
She was rushed to hospital where she was treated for injuries, which impaired her ability to walk.
The matter was reported to police leading to the arrest of the kombi crew.
These misguided elements should be punished for these barbaric crimes against passengers who pay their hard earned cash. These are some of the incidents which make me not like vana Hwindi.
