Hwange Colliery introduces scheme to pay workers in foreign currency

Faced by a continuous loss of skilled staff abandoning the company for greener pastures, Hwange Colliery Company has introduced a scheme under which selected employees will be paid in foreign currency.

The company is following an initiative that is in line with similar measures by other mining companies in Zimbabwe, in order to retain staff.
Beneficiaries of the scheme include Artisans, Doctors and some managers. Those who are not getting paid in foreign currency will be paid twice each month.

“This is an initiative aimed at reducing the effects of brain drain on our company. Introducing such measures is not just a retention incentive but also aims to motivate our staff,” Hwange Colliery, public relations officer, Burzil Dube is quoted is quoted in the Herald newspaper.

Good for those whose companies can afford payments in foreign currency. Our Zimbabwe dollar has lost so much value and is no longer accepted by many people in business transactions.

So what will happen to the majority of the workers in the country? Can the government afford to pay civil servants in foreign currency, or pay them twice in a month?
