Hope for a new start in Zimbabwe as Mugabe meets Tsvangirai

There is hope in millions of Zimbabweans that there maybe an end to the crisis and suffering in the country after all. It is early days, but who could have thought Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai could actually shake hands and agree to talk.

Could this be the beginning of a new era, a new road towards political and economic recovery in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai signed a deal on Monday that committed the ruling Zanu PF party and the two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change to two weeks of negotiations with South Africa mediators.
The rivals agreed to to hold talks about sharing power to bring an end to the crisis in Zimbabwe.

“There was convergence among all the parties that the dialogue had to start as soon as the MOA(Memorandum of Understanding) was done, hence the resumption of that process today,” an MDC official said.

“This is just the first step on a journey whose duration and success is dependent on the sincerity and good faith of all parties involved,” Morgan Tsvangirai said in a statement.

The welfare and life of the citizens of Zimbabwe is far more important than the political leaders in the country. For the benefit of the long suffering Zimbabweans, we hope the talks will be held in good faith by both parties and hopefully a solution will be found soon.

As the economic crisis in Zimbabwe worsens everyday, is a power sharing government the answer to the problems in the country? Feel free to share your views on the talks between Mugabe and Tsvangirai by posting your comments.

I am not so sure about these talks. It is a step forward yes and something good could come out of them but I can’t shake that niggling feeling that Mugabe is going to pull some sort of stunt that will see him stay where he is and MDC on the sidelines.

@Living Zimbabwe……It’s a bit difficult to trust Mugabe and his party, but we hope they are taking part(in the talks) in good faith.

With some of the things that have happened in the past, yes, there is a chance that nothing will come out of these talks. But for people’s sake we hope a better Zimbabwe will come out of these talks.
