When President Robert Mugabe met Pope Francis

Just seen someone asked on Twitter, ‘How many Pope’s has President Robert Mugabe met since Arsenal last won a trophy?‘ Probably not a nice thing to say if you are one of the millions of Gunners in the townships.

On to the president’s visit to the Vatican – Everyone was FREE to attend the Pope’s inauguration in the Vatican, below is our President Cde R G Mugabe and his wife Grace when they met Pope Francis.

Some so it better to say ‘Mugabe slips into Italy for papal inauguration‘ even though everyone was free to attend.

According to the same Reuters report “officials went to some lengths to play down the technical infringement of a European Union travel ban on Africa’s oldest leader”.

The report goes on to say President Mugabe was met by a priest who said “On behalf of Pope Francis, welcome to the Vatican, welcome to the Holy See.” He was then taken to a hotel on the famous Via Veneto.

The Vatican says it did not issue invitations for the inauguration on Tuesday of Pope Francis – Latin America’s first pontiff – who was elected by a secret conclave last Wednesday. But representatives of world governments are welcome to attend.

“The Holy See informs everyone that this event is taking place. There are no invitations. There are no privileges and no one is refused. While one country may have problems with someone else, we invite no one. This must be made clear,” a Vatican spokesman said.

What did you think about President Mugabe’s trip to the vatican?

Zimbabwe referendum election results

94.5 percent Zimbabweans  voted ‘YES’ in a referendum on a new constitution to accept reforms that call for a strengthening of human rights, curb presidential powers and limit the presidential term of office to 2 five year terms.

Judge Rita Makarau, head of the state electoral commission, said Tuesday just over 3 million Zimbabweans voted for the draft constitution and 170,489 voted against. Spoilt ballot papers that were not factored in to the final results.

In Saturday’s polling, all Zimbabwean citizens over the age of 18 were allowed to vote without being registered on official voters’ lists. Of the population of 13 million, half are estimated under 18, leaving a turnout Saturday of slightly below 50 percent of people eligible to vote on the constitution.

Zimbabweans vote in referendum election

Zimbabweans are voting in a key referendum on a new constitution that would limit the presidential term of office to two 5 year terms for the first time, starting with the next election.

Morgan Tsvangirai

The limit will not apply in retrospect, which means Mugabe has 10 more years as head of state if he is re-elected.

“This constitution is a symbol of transformation and is a loud announcement of the advent of a new dispensation. I will vote yes,” Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said in a statement on the eve of the referendum.

Election results are expected to be released within five days of the vote.

The country’s main political parties, ZANU-PF and MDC – T are in favour of the proposed law changes, making the simple majority needed for a “yes” vote a near certainty.

This marks the beginning of a new era in Zimbabwe, however I wonder how many people voting today have actually read or seen the 172 page draft constitution?
