New Commercial Bank eneters the Zimbabwe financial services sector

>> 31 August 2008

TN Bank is the latest name in Zimbabwe's financial services sector. The bank is jointly owned by TN Financial Holdings Limited (TNFHL) and Trust Holdings Limited (THL). The bank was scheduled to open to the public this month but has now pushed it's opening to October.

The bank public opening has been pushed to October because of it's delayed capital raising initiative. TNFHL Group CEO, Tawanda Nyambirai confirmed to the Standard newspaper the bank's delayed opening to the public saying they were tying up loose ends.

"We will be opening in October. We have secured a branch in Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru while we are negotiating for a branch in Mutare and another branch in Harare," Mr Nyambirai said.

Zimbabwe Exchange Rate £1 to ZW$600 000

The Zimbabwe dollar exchange rate: One British pound(£1) to ZW$600 000. The Zimbabwean dollar has not been stable against other trading currencies for some time now. It is very important to check the rates at the time when you want to send your money. Don't forget to share with others the best rates available, you can do this by posting your comments.

The Zimbabwean dollar is becoming increasingly unusable as more and more people now require payment in foreign currency.

The reserve bank recently authorised some shops and is currently issuing licences for those shops which are allowed to sell goods in foreign currency.

It is very much advisable if you are sending money to your relatives, to give them in foreign currency. Because of the high inflation in the country, it's not worth keeping your money in Zimbabwean dollars.

What's the best rate you have heard? As the exchange rate changes everyday, feel free to share the best rates available. There are also different rates around, so for the benefit of others, it's always nice to share. Feel free to share anything that will be of help to your fellow Zimbabweans.

Mixed views over Kirsty Coventry's US$100 000 handshake from Mugabe

>> 30 August 2008

The US$100 000 awarded to Kirsty Coventry by the Zimbabwe government has generated a lot of debate in forums and in the blog sphere. Kirsty Coventry was given the US$100 000 golden handshake by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe for her efforts at the just ended Beijing Olympics where she won 4 medals (1 Gold and 3 Silver).

Was Robert Mugabe right to given Kirsty US$100 000?

Kirsty was the only member of the Zimbabwe Olympic team to get a medal from the Beijing Olympics.

People seem to be asking the morality of giving such a large sum of money US$100 000 of public money, whilst the majority of Zimbabweans are living in poverty. Was it a bit misguided on he part of the government like some seem to be suggesting?

However some have supported Kirsty's golden handshake, that was some performance from her at the Beijing Olympics. She was outstanding in the swimming pool.

Whatever people have said Kirsty is a great competitor, true ambassador of Zimbabwe sport and I think the best ever Zimbabwean Olympian. Respect!!

Was Mugabe right to give Kirsty US$100 000? Have your say by posting your comments.

Britain relaxes Zimbabwe travel warning

Zimbabwe's travel has been lifted by the British Foreign Office. This is brilliant news to the Zimbabwe Tourism industry since the travel ban had severely affected the tourism sector. Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office lifted the travel ban to Zimbabwe following a decrease in violence in the country.

Zimbabwe have got some of the best tourist attractions which include the Victoria Falls, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and hunting safari parks.

However the British Foreign Office cautioned that unrest could erupt again without warning as uncertainty continues over power-sharing arrangements between the ruling Zanu PF and the opposition MDC.

Britain Foreign Office advices against all travel to high density, low-income suburban areas at any time and all but essential travel to rural Mashonaland, Manicaland and farming areas.

"There have been a number of serious incidents in rural areas and it is dangerous for farmers or agricultural workers to visit former properties or other agricultural areas. You should also avoid areas where war veterans are active," the foreign office statement said.

Some have raised questions on the morality of visiting Zimbabwe with the current government still in power. But personally I know local communities who have benefited from the tourism industry and some still benefit from tourist visiting the country. There are problems we have in Zimbabwe today, poverty and the current economic crisis, but the security situation is not as bad as people may want us to believe.

However there is no doubt the Zimbabwe government, operators in the tourism sector and other interested stakeholders need to work together to improve the situation in the country before we can see tourists coming to Zimbabwe again.

Zimbabwe lifts ban on food agencies

The Zimbabwe government has finally yielded to major pressure and announced that it is lifting the three months ban on the distribution of food to starving Zimbabweans in the country. Aid agencies were banned from giving out food aid during the run up to the elections in June.

In a statement broadcast on ZBC TV, the Ministry of Social Welfare said: "The government has with immediate effect lifted the suspension of operations of private voluntary organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)."

These included those involved in "humanitarian food assistance, relief, recovery and development, childcare and protection and the rights of people with disabilities."

Robert Mugabe had banned Aid agencies from operating in Zimbabwe in the run-up to the June 27 presidential elections accusing them of using food to persuade rural people to voter for Morgan Tsvangirai.

No need for more talks on Zimbabwe's power-sharing deal

Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu PF has said there is no need for more power-sharing talks with the opposition MDC, the Herald reported on Friday. The newspaper quoted Patrick Chinamasa who heads Zanu PF's tean in the negotiations saying: "There was no need for more talks since there was a deal already on the table waiting to be signed."

Zimbabwe's rival parties have failed to reach an agreement on a power-sharing deal that could end the current political and economic crisis in the country.

Meanwhile President Mugabe announced that he would soon form a new government saying the opposition Movement for Democratic Change was not willing to join the new administration.

Zimbabwe Music Sales Hit Record Lows

The music industry in Zimbabwe is just another victim of the current political and economic crisis in the country today. Zimbabwe music sales have hit record low levels with one record executive saying the situation now is the same like at the height of the liberation war between 1977 and 1979.

Music stores have seen a severe drop in sales, and some music bars are reported to have last ordered products in May this year. As a result record companies are struggling, Grama Records, ZMC and Ngaavongwe are reported to be alternating workers, whilst Record and Tape Promotion has sent it's workforce on leave pending retrenchment.

The drop in music sales has been attributed to people not buying music because of price distortions.

"Price distortions are not only making it difficult for music lovers to access music, but we are also finding it difficult to operate," said Mr Chitiga of Music City and Miekles.

Like many other sectors of the economy, the Zimbabwe music industry has not been spared from the current economic crisis in the country. Zimbabwe's inflation stands at a record 11.2 million per cent.

However the music industry could do better by taking advantage of Zimbabwe's diaspora community. That's another market they could look to market their products to and benefit from the foreign currency that I'm sure will be a major boost to the music industry.

Amnesty International hope new exhibit will inspire Africa to act against human rights abuses in Zimbabwe

A new exhibit by Amnesty International opened in South Africa on Tuesday. It features images of torture victims and Zimbabwe police beating protesters, along with words of human rights activists. Amnesty International hopes this exhibit will inspire citizens across Africa to press their governments for action in Zimbabwe.

Albie Sachs, a judge in South Africa's highest court, said the images at the exhibit weren't the most gruesome, often taken hurriedly by photographers who risk arrest for portraying Zimbabwe in bad light.

The images at the exhibit show "the spirit of what the people of the country can achieve despite all the difficulties," Sachs said.

The exhibit titled "My Rights My Struggle" is scheduled to travel to countries including Tanzania, Botswana and Senegal over the next month.

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has increased tariffs whilst at the sametime load shedding has intensified.

Barely three weeks after a 2 000 per cent hike in electricity tariffs, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has increased tariffs again by more than 600 per cent. How does ZESA justify this increase at a time when they have also intensified load shedding. Making people pay for something that is not even available, is that how the government treat it's people?

ZESA group stakeholders' spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira, said the parastatal had no choice but to increase power cuts because of reduced production at Hwange Thermal power station. He said "ZESA was doing it's best to keep prices down but the harsh economic climate was making it impossible.

The new tariffs range from $370.76 for those who use 2.5amps, up to $850.22(all revalued). In addition residents are also expected to pay a fixed monthly charge of $322.29.

Residents have complained that some do not even earn the sort of money that ZESA is charging and on top of that, residents on fixed charge have to pay for electricity they don't use because of load shading. The people can not afford all these charges, so why do these parastatals keep pushing people into more poverty and misery?

President Mugabe booed by MDC MPs in Parliament

Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change MPs booed President Mugabe as he delivered his speech at the official opening of parliament on Tuesday, in an unprecedented show of defiance.
MDC MPs refused to stand when President Mugabe entered, and shouted Zanu PF "is rotten!"

The jeers occasionally drowned President Mugabe's speech that was broadcast live on ZBC TV. The president had to raise his voice and, looking annoyed, raced through the final lines.

"The elections are now behind us, what is upon us is a challenge of vision and common purposes. Now is a time to put Zimbabwe first," President Mugabe said.

Meanwhile the opposition MDC said three of it's MPs were arrested at parliament on what it called trumped-up political violence charges.

"The MDC views this continued harassment and arrest of MDC legislators by the state security agents as a direct affront to the will of the people of Zimbabwe," the MDC said in a statement.
Four MDC MPs are said to have been arrested in the past two days.

Grace Mugabe gave US$1 500 each to members of the Zimbabwe Team to the 2008 Beijing Oylmpics

Members and officials of the Zimbabwe team to the Beijing Olympics where each given US$1 500 by Zimbabwe's First Lady, Grace Mugabe. The reward is for doing the country proud by winning four medals at the just ended Beijing Olympics Games, according to a report in the Chronicle.

The thirteen Zimbabwean athletes and their managers and coaches received the cash reward from Grace Mugabe in recognition of a 'perfect and improbable' Olympic run which saw them walking away with the four medals after 16 days of tough competition.

This is the biggest medal haul Zimbabwe has ever won at the Olympics. The medals all came from one athlete, Kirsty Coventry. She won 1 Gold and 3 silver medals in her swimming events at the Beijing Olympics.

The money was handed to the Zimbabwe team by Zimbabwe's Ambassador to China, Fredrick Shava, during a dinner reception he hosted for the team at the Zimbabwe Embassy. Shava told members of the Zimbabwe team and invited guests that the First Lady Grace Mugabe was moved by the team's 'brilliant performance' at the Beijing Olympics and "as a token of appreciation," she felt obliged to honour them by giving each member and official of the team the cash reward of US$1 500.

Grace Mugabe was in Beijing during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

So, seeing that there was no mention of the money coming from the government, it was given to the athletes by the First Lady, we wait to see what the government is going to do for the Zimbabwe Team. Share your views by posting your comments.

Zanu PF MPs vote for MDC as Lovemore Moyo of the MDC won the vote for the speaker of Parliament

Since when did Zanu PF members vote for the opposition MDC? Well, that's exactly what happened in Zimbabwe today, when Zanu PF MPs voted for a candidate from Arthur Mutambara's smaller MDC faction in the secret ballot for the speaker of parliament.

However Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai won the vote for the speaker of parliament. This is yet another blow to President Robert Mugabe's hold on power.
Lovemore Moyo got 110 votes out of the 210 member assembly, giving the opposition one of the most powerful posts in Zimbabwean politics.

Must be embarrassing to the President.

MDC MPs broke into song after the result, mocking the ruling Zanu PF party as a dying party.

Moyo comfortably beat a candidate put up by Arthur Mutambara's smaller MDC faction, who was also backed by the Zanu PF party.

Emerson Mnangagwa long seen as Robert Mugabe's successor congratulated the new spaeker of parliament.
"Mr Speaker, Sir. This is a truly historic event and I would like, on behalf of the president, our party and this side of this august House, to congratulate you," Mnangagwa said in parliament.

Are we now seeing the end of Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF? Are these the signs that Mugabe's is finally losing his hold on power? And Zanu PF, supporting an MDC candidate, what is happening in Zanu PF? Things are surely changing in Zimbabwe. Have your say by posting your comments.

The Cash Crisis and Mass Confusion in Zimbabwe

>> 23 August 2008

Confusion and uncertainty is now part of the daily life in Zimbabwe today. Blame it on the government, people don't know what challenges and obstacles tomorrow will bring. In fact the current political and economic crisis in the country has resulted in unprecedented levels of suffering among the majority of Zimbabwe's citizens.

It has been reported that 80% of the population live below the poverty datum line, the majority of the people are unemployed and with a record breaking inflation rate of 11.2 million per cent, it's surely a nightmare to be living in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is now a confused country!

The recent money re-denominations by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe have brought more misery and confusion than the expected benefits. At first it was the 'coin' crazy. Long condemned to the rush dumps and money collector museums because they were valueless and useless. All of a sudden 'coins' had value after reserve bank governor Mr Gono removed 10 zeros from the local currency and brought the coins back into circulation.

There was confusion in shops with long queues of shoppers with bags full of coins. Cashiers used to counting loads of valueless notes struggled to count the suddenly found coin wealth.

As if to highlight the level of confusion that is rife in Zimbabwe today. People are now using the old $1000 note in some parts of the country. Are they supposed to be using them? NO! They have not been brought back into the money system.

People are said to be hunting for these $1000 notes believing they are now legal tender. What started as a rumour soon gathered momentum across the whole country, and it has been reported that a woman was even buying these notes from people for $500.

Some say because they saw the notes being flashed on television and they believed they were now legal tender. Some shops and market traders are reported to be accepting these $1000 notes because they also believe that they have been re-introduced into circulation.
For those who can find the old notes, there is no doubt they will benefit from the newly found spending power. But what about the shops and market traders? What will they do with the notes?

Welcome to Zimbabwe. Feel FREE to contribute by posting your comments.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Increase Daily Cash withdrawal Limits

All the efforts by the Reserve Bank to solve the current cash problems in the country seem to have failed. Is the change in withdrawal limits the answer to the current cash crisis in Zimbabwe? For the third time in a month the reserve bank has increased the withdrawal limit.
Well, the reserve bank has announced the increase in daily cash withdrawal limits from $300.00 to $500.00 of the revalued currency.

The changes in withdrawal limits are for both individual and business account holders and are with immediate effect.

In a statement the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Mr Gideon Gono urged the banking sector to make the necessary arrangements to ensure they secure adequate cash to meet public demand.

For the third time in a month Mr Gono has increased the withdrawal limit. But surely this has failed to solve the cash crisis in the country. Don't they have better ideas?

Timeline

August 1...Mr Gono increased withdrawal limit from $100 billion(old currency) to $200.00 (new currency).

August 7...Mr Gono increased the withdrawal limit from $200 to $300 saying it was in line with the commemoration of Heroes Day. When are they going to be accountable for these failures?

August 21....Mr Gono increases the withdrawal limit from $300 to $500.

In the meantime the cash crisis in the country continues. Has Mr Gono failed then in his job as Reserve Bank Governor? He was hailed as the savior of Zimbabwe's economy when he was appointed, but is it time to do the only honourable thing and say enough is enough and resign from his post? He has failed.

Zimbabwe's Handcrafts and Gift Industry can be a viable Export Venture

>> 22 August 2008

The export industry is one sector that can play a major part in the revival of the Zimbabwe economy. The Handcraft and Gifts sector used to rely on the high volume of tourist coming to Zimbabwe. But with the current problems in the country, there has been a drop in the number of tourist coming to Zimbabwe, thus affecting most businesses which relied on the booming tourist industry.

However the handcraft and gifts sector can be turned around into a viable export sector. Zimbabwe could benefit from the Indian Export Promotion Council for Handcrafts, through organising exchange programs, an Indian official has said.

He said Zimbabwe could benefit from India's experience as a major exporter of handcrafts and gifts by organising exchange programs, marketing, training and promotional activities.

Zimbabwe has a vibrant handcraft sector which is dominated by people in the informal sector who sell most of their goods to the local market. Their products are popular with tourists, but the drop in tourists visiting Zimbabwe has affected their business.

India's handcraft and gifts industry is a billion dollar industry with exports to many countries including Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile the political crisis in the country has also affected the business of Zimbabwean sculptors. Their products are meant for the foreign visitors to Zimbabwe and exports to international markets. But the drop in tourists visiting Zimbabwe has affected their trade.

When is the political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe going to end? Careers have been destroyed, businesses which used to earn the precious foreign currency have been destroyed. A political settlement is the only way forward for Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's Opposition MDC says power-sharing agreement violated

>> 21 August 2008

Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Thursday that if parliament was convened next week that will be a violation of the agreed framework for power-sharing talks, which the mediators will have to deal with.
Tsvangirai was speaking at a news conference in Nairobi, and he told the conference that President Robert Mugabe's intention to open parliament next Tuesday was a 'repudiation' of the Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) with the opposition on the framework of power-sharing talks.

"A violation of the MOU will have to be dealt with by the mediator," said Tsvangirai

"If President Mugabe goes ahead to convene parliament, appoint a new cabinet, it means he is proceeding to violate the conditions of the MOU which means he may have abandoned the basis for the talks but we don't know what his intentions are," Tsvangirai added.

Tsvangirai confirmed that the talks were deadlocked over the roles of president and prime minister in a new government. Tsvangirai wants a real executive power as prime minister.

"There is one stumbling issue which we have been grappling with, the framework of power and the roles of the president and the new position of prime minister for the duration of the transition leading up to 2-1/2 years," said Tsvangirai.

Zimbabwe's Brian Dzingai could not stop lightining Bolt from striking Gold

>> 20 August 2008

But did he have any chance against the 'Superman' from Jamaica?

In fact nobody could stop the impressive Jamaican, Usain Bolt who smashed the 200m world record at the Beijing Olympics to become the fastest man of all time. Bolt finished at 19.30 to break the previous record of 19.32 to claim his second gold at the Beijing games.
But well done to Brian Dzingai even though he didn't get a medal, but getting to the final in such a very competitive race is a commendable effort. Brian just missed on the medals when he finished fourth.

But the man everyone is talking about is Jamaica's Usain Bolt. He won 100m on Saturday in world record time and in the 200m final he was even faster and broke the record set by American Michael Johnson 12 years ago. It was just amazing! Impressive from the fastest man in history.

Lightning Bolt has struck twice at the Beijing Olympics.

He: NO! Why are you even asking?

She: Will you kiss me?

He: Every chance I get!

She: Will you hit me?

He: Are you crazy! I'm not that kind of person!

She: Can I trust you?

He: Yes.

She: Darling!

Zimbabwe Parliament to Convene Next Week

Zimbabwe's parliament is set to convene. The government plans to convene parliament despite a deadlock in the current power-sharing talks between Zanu PF and Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC.
The opposition MDC is reported to have said that they do not oppose the opening of parliament but will reject any moves by President Mugabe to appoint a cabinet before a power-sharing deal is agreed.

"If he(Mugabe) goes further and appoints a cabinet, it will be against a letter and the spirit of the MOU," party spokesman Tapuwa Mashakada said to Reuters. He was referring to the Memorandum of Understanding between Zanu PF and MDC on the current power-sharing negotiations.

Speaking on state television channel, ZBC, the clerk of parliament Austin Zvoma said, "The swearing in would take place on Monday or Tuesday to enable new legislators to execute the mandate they were given by the people."

Africa mourn Zambia's President, Levy Mwanawasa

>> 19 August 2008

Africa has lost a true leader!

The death of Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa is a big loss to Africa. President Mwanawasa died Tuesday in a Paris Hospital.
His death is not only a loss to the Zambian people but also to the SADC community where he was the chairperson. And for the people of Zimbabwe it's a big loss because he was one of the leaders who was prepared to speak on out on the Zimbabwean issue.

Mr Mwanawasa will be remember for his role in resolving African conflicts. In Zimbabwe we will not forget him, he was one of the strong critics of President Mugabe for the way he has managed the country and the political crisis in Zimbabwe.

President Mwanawasa won praise abroad for tackling corruption in Zambia and turning Zambia into one of the success stories on the African continent.

President Mwanawasa suffered a stroke during an African Union summit in Egypt on June 29. He was taken to France after initially being treated in Cairo.

Zimbabwe's Inflation surges to 11.2 Million Per cent

Once the bread basket of Africa and an economic model in the Southern Africa region, now Zimbabwe is in economic crisis, is there any solution to the Zimbabwe crisis?

Zimbabwe's annual rate of inflation soared to 11.2 million per cent in the month of June, according to figures from the central statistical agency quoted in the local papers.

"Zimbabwe's annual rate of inflation surged to 11.2 per cent in the month of June," according to a report in the Herald.

Zimbabwe's economy is in a mess, with the majority of the population unemployed and 80 per cent living below the poverty datum line. Our local currency is no longer accepted by many people as a means of payment, and foreign currencies like the American dollar and the South African Rand are now generally accepted as forms of payment.

Our government does not seem to be able to solve the current economic crisis, neither do they have a will to let other people manage the economy. Many Zimbabweans hope there will be a power-sharing deal soon, which seem to be Zimbabwe's only hope of economic recovery.

What future is there under a Zanu PF government?

Hwange Colliery introduces scheme to pay workers in foreign currency

Faced by a continuous loss of skilled staff abandoning the company for greener pastures, Hwange Colliery Company has introduced a scheme under which selected employees will be paid in foreign currency.

The company is following an initiative that is in line with similar measures by other mining companies in Zimbabwe, in order to retain staff.
Beneficiaries of the scheme include Artisans, Doctors and some managers. Those who are not getting paid in foreign currency will be paid twice each month.

"This is an initiative aimed at reducing the effects of brain drain on our company. Introducing such measures is not just a retention incentive but also aims to motivate our staff," Hwange Colliery, public relations officer, Burzil Dube is quoted is quoted in the Herald newspaper.

Good for those whose companies can afford payments in foreign currency. Our Zimbabwe dollar has lost so much value and is no longer accepted by many people in business transactions.

So what will happen to the majority of the workers in the country? Can the government afford to pay civil servants in foreign currency, or pay them twice in a month?

Sanganai World Travel and Tourism Africa Fair where the World meet Africa in Zimbabwe

>> 18 August 2008

It's about time we start promoting our Zimbabwe, all the negative publicity is not helping our country at all.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority has re-branded Travel Expo in line with the authority's vision for growth and transformation. The Travel Expo has transformed to an international level where various tourist destinations will meet in Zimbabwe to exhibit, network and showcase their tourism products to global markets.

Travel Expo has been re-branded to Sanganai World Travel and Tourism Africa Fair.

"Recognising that the Expo was not only about visiting, ZTA saw it appropriate to clearly position ZITE(Travel Expo) to an international level where the world meets Africa in Zimbabwe, said ZTA chief executive Mr Karikoga Kaseke.

"The re-branding process was done to transform the fair to a global tourism trade fair that compares well with or better other big international tourism and travel fairs such as the Indaba in South Africa, World Travel Market (WTM) in London and the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. It was also done to raise the profile of the fair to attract leading world destinations and markets.

More than 50 foreign and 400 local exhibitors are said to have already confirmed their participation at the Sanganai World Travel and Tourism Africa Fair scheduled for Bulawayo in October.

Zimbabwe: Tsvangirai under pressure from SADC

Leaders from the Southern African community(SADC) are reported to be putting pressure on opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to accept a power-sharing deal with President Robert Mugabe.
Newspaper reports claim Mbeki is turning up the heat on Tsvangirai and the opposition MDC has been given an ultimatum to deal or let parliament decide.

SADC leaders met in Johannesburg, South Africa over the weekend and called for the convening of the parliament after the March 29 elections, in which Morgan Tsvangirai won the elections.

The Times reports that, "The threat by SADC leaders to take the matter to parliament can be seen as a way of exerting pressure on Tsvangirai to sign."

Which way now Zimbabwe? Given these latest developments from the SADC summit, if parliament convenes and Mugabe appoint cabinet ministers, that is likely to exclude Tsvangirai. So what is the future of the country then?

Is it Doom and Gloom ahead?

Not a good day for Zimbabwe's Dynamos in Cairo

>> 17 August 2008

Well, it was not to be for the Zimbabwe Champions Dynamos FC in Cairo today. Dynamos lost 2-1 to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Cairo on Sunday. De Mbare conceded a goal in the last minute of the game. Probably a draw could have been a fair result.

The other teams in the group, Zamalek and Asec Mimosas drew 0-0 also in Cairo.

The results mean Al Ahly top the group with seven points, Zamalek have four, Dynamos three and Asec two points.

Negotiations to continue as Zimbabwe rivals fail to agree on a deal

The political crisis in Zimbabwe continues as the rivals have failed to agree on a deal. The parties failed to agree at the end of the SADC summit in South Africa where the Zimbabwe crisis was high on the agenda.
Meanwhile the Troika security organ of SADC will continue to meet with the Zimbabwe leaders to find a 'speedy resolution' to the problems in the country, South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Sunday.

In his closing address of the SADC Summit, he said the council had been meeting with rival leaders in Zimbabwe and would continue on Sunday even after the summit had been officially closed.

"The(Troika) continues to engage with this matter and indeed after we have formally closed the organ will convene again, it is an indication of the seriousness with which the SADC approaches this question."

"A speedy conclusion (needs to be reached) so that it indeed become possible to address the enormous challenges that face the masses of the people of Zimbabwe," said Mbeki.

SADC leaders are not giving up on Zimbabwe, and negotiations are continuing.

Former Zimbabwe Champions CAPS United have fallen on hard times

Whilst their city rivals Dynamos are competing in the lucrative Africa Champions league, CAPS United teeters on the verge of relegation. Ever since CAPS were Zimbabwe Champions a few years ago, things have not been going on well for Makepekepe! They now even have two 'CAPS' teams in the premiership.

Hard to take if you are a Makepekepe supporter, would you switch to DeMbare or put up with all the pain of living in the shadows of Dynamos?

Meanwhile the troubled club is said to have managed to pay up for loans advanced to them and services rendered by Belgian Kit suppliers, Legea Sportswear during 2005 and 2006.

Legea Zimbabwe, the official suppliers of the Warriors Kit are also taking the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to court for failing to pay for replica shirts worth US$19 845 delivered two years ago.

Gwanda residents face starvation as Zanu PF councilors are accused of stealing maize

Zimbabwe, can we trust the Zanu PF government to feed the country?
Hundreds of households in Gwanda are said to be facing starvation this month after outgoing Zanu PF councilors reportedly shared among themselves a maize allocation meant for their ward last week.

According to The Standard, the diversion of 200 bags of maize from the Grain Marketing Board(GMB) by the Zanu PF pfficials was exposed when the new councilor for Enyandeni, Leonard Sibindi of the Arthur Mutambara led MDC, went to collect grain on behalf of villagers in his ward.

The diversion of maize is said to be prevalent in the drought prone Matebeleland South region. Some of the maize is said to have been given to those misguided elements who masquerade as 'war-veterans'.
The self-styled war veterans are still camped at Zanu PF bases that were set up during Robert Mugabe's re-election campaign.

Greedy Zanu PF officials Starve villagers

"There is serious starvation in the province, especially in Gwanda South where people are resorting to eating porridge made from baobab fruits and roots from a tree known as Mutopi." said Petros Mukwena, the MDC Matebeleland South provincial secretary. "The little that comes in terms of grain or under BACOSSI(the government's food hamper scheme) is snatched by Zanu PF politicians.

Matebeleland South was declared a disaster area after a government assessment last year. The food situation in Matebeleland South is said to have also worsened over the last two months following the government's ban on Aid Agencies.

Can we trust the Zanu PF government to feed the country? No way Jose! The only way is to get rid of the corrupt people.

Thank God The New Premiership Season Is Here

>> 16 August 2008

Is it only me who feels it has been a long summer without football?

What a welcome relief now that the new football season has finally began, at least there is something meaningful to watch on TV. Expectations are very high for there is a lot on offer, but who will be crowned Premiership Champions come end of the season?

I don't think I will be wrong to say the title is coming to the Kop End.

To tell you the truth, my team was very lucky last week. It was lucky to come back from Belgium with a draw, but the good thing is, they are still in there.

Arsenal kicked-off the day with a win over West Brom, good for the Gunners, but will they last the distance or it will be the same like last year....heart-break. Poor Gunners!

Is Liverpool going to win the league this year?

I think this is the year. Liverpool started the campaign with a win over Sunderland and surely there are better things to come.

How many agree with me and think this year is Liverpool's year?

Despite the American owners of Liverpool messing up things sometimes, the Reds will be a force this season and I think it will be our happy year.

As for United and Chelsea, they are already playing Catch-up!

Premiership Results:

Arsenal 1............West Brom 0
Sunderland 0.........Liverpool 1
Hull 2...............Fulham 1
Bolton 3.............Stoke 1
Everton 2............Blackburn 3
West Ham 2...........Wigan 1
Middlesbrough 2......Spurs 1

Zimbabwe introduced Levy on electricity generators

It's so sad and shameful for a government to behave like this! No wonder this issue has caused a lot of anger among Zimbabweans.

How else can the Zimbabwe government explain this latest tax on the already suffering people. They want to tax people for electricity that the government has failed to supply. Extortion!
Mugabe and his government never run-out of ways to drain every little penny from Zimbabweans.

This time the Zimbabwe government has introduced a legal instrument which now makes it an offence to own a generator either for domestic or industrial purposes without the approval of the Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Commission (Zerc)
Instrument 103 of 2008 makes it mandatory for all household and industrial generators to be inspected and approved by Zerc for a fee pegged in US Dollars.(but isn't it illegal to charge for goods and services in foreign currency?)

"Any person who owns or operates a standby electricity generator, having a generation, transmission, distribution or supply capacity of less than 100 killowatts, shall within 120 days, notify the commission about the fact...and submit together with the notification the verification and inspection fee."

Those who flout the regulations risk being fined or jailed for six months.

It is now a requirement if you own a electricity generator, generating more than 100 to apply for a licence. To Quote from the statement:
"Any person owning or operating an electricity generator or a standby electricity generator, generating, transmitting, distributing or supplying electricity shall be deemed to be an electricity undertaking....and shall apply for the appropriate electricity licence....unless he or she satisfies the commission, by written notification submitted together with the verification and safety inspection fee prescribed that the generator or generators are for the sole purpose of his or her household or business."

The Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Commission(Zerc) will charge US$5 and US$20 for verification and safety inspection for electrical generators below 100 killowatts and those above respectively.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Commission has failed to supply electricity to households and business, so why should they levy those who spend their money to ensure they have electricity?
Is this latest government move legal?

SADC to seek an end to Zimbabwe Crisis

It's time all the madness and political crisis in Zimbabwe ends!

Zimbabwe's political rivals are expected to resume power-sharing talks on the sidelines of the SADC meeting in South Africa with pressure mounting for the parties to find a solution to the current crisis in the country.

"There is one focus and it is that this matter must be resolved," South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dhlamini Zuma said of Zimbabwe ahead of the SADC meeting.

South African President, Thabo Mbeki mandated to mediate in Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks met the participants on Friday.

Botswana boycott SADC meeting

Meanwhile Botswana has taken the toughest stand among Zimbabwe's neighbours but all fear the consequences of the political crisis in Zimbabwe coupled with economic decline may lead to total meltdown in the country.

Botswana President, Seretse Khama Ian Khama is boycotting the SADC meeting to protest against Mugabe's participation.

Once supportive South Africans to protests against Robert Mugabe as pressure mounts, is he really the legitimate President of Zimbabwe and will he give up some of his powers?

South African Labour Federation COSATU will lead a march to protest against Mugabe's participation in the meeting.

Zimbabwe Police Station Bombing Was An Inside Job

Zimbabwe Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has said the recent bombing incident at Harare Central Police Station was an inside job and investigations have since intensified.

Commissioner Chihuri told the state controlled Herald newspaper that policeman and women should not resort to "distraction" of property but should approach his office if they have grievances.

"We are convinced that as an organisation we might not come out clean on the bombing issue. Destruction is not the solution and everyone with a grievance should come to my office so that it can be addressed."

Commissioner Chihuri said the net would soon close in on the culprits behind the August 2 bombing. He also called on members of the police force to be professional and shun corruption.

According to police, the bombs appeared to have been planted by someone with expertise in the use of explosives. Police also found two unexploded bombs on the first floor of the CID Headquarters, overlooking Kenneth Kaunda Avenue.

Zimbabwe's Power-Sharing Talks at SADC Summit

Zimbabwe's political rivals are expected in South Africa on Friday ahead of the SADC summit over the weekend as negotiators aim for a settlement to solve the current political crisis in Zimbabwe.
President Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders, Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara have been involved in negotiations but have so far failed to agree on a power-sharing deal.

A spokesman for an opposition faction said negotiators were working on the eve of the summit in a bib to come to a deal.

"They are trying to come to a deal before the SADC meeting tomorrow," said Edwin Mushoriwa, spokesman for Arthur Mutambara leader of the smaller MDC faction.

However the spokesman for the Morgan Tsvangirai MDC faction, Nqobizita Mlilo, said he was not aware of any talks underway on Friday.

"Any dialogue that happens will happen within the context of the summit," said Mlilo

Zanu PF's representative, Partick Chinamasa had earlier said talks were to resume.

"I can confirm we are leaving for South Africa today together with his excellency, President Mugabe. The talks are going to resume on the sidelines of the SADC summit." said Chinamasa

Chinamasa told the state owned Herald newspaper that there was pressure for the country to convene parliament and form a government.

"We can not continue wandering around without direction, hence the need to swear in parliamentarians and open the house so that the elected members can continue to fulfil their constitutional mandate," said Chinamasa.

Incensed by Mutambara: Which way now my fellow Zimbabweans?

In this post Oliver, one of My Zimbabwe Today subscribers shares his disappointment at the developments regarding the power-sharing talks in Zimbabwe. In particular the issue surrounding Arthur Mutambara.

I am incensed by the developments on the talks, particularly issues surrounding Mutambara. I wonder why such reasonable and competent people like Welshman Ncube are keeping their loyalty to this spin Doctor.

He was used by Zanu PF/CIO to split the MDC and he marginally succeeded. This time he is now being used to make an attempt for Zanu PF to swallow MDC in the same way it did to PF Zapu. That's why he is in such a hurry to have a deal signed a deal that will compromise the wishes and aspirations of the Electorate, as rightly pointed out by the legitimate President of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai.

I am glad Tsvangirai is playing his cards with the wisdom of a true and loyal leader of the people. What a wise man!!! I would personally hail Tsvangirai if he pulls off in protest of preserving the status quo. This Mutambara madness should be left to float until his MPs desert him to continue the true cause of the former MDC. l bet you his constituencies will rejoin the Tsvangirai MDC if he continues to meddle with the talks, and will leave him in the wilderness.

Not many Zimbabweans know that Mutambara's wife is a close relative of Grace Mugabe. I am not surprised by all those myopic comments meant to hast through this deal.

If anyone had the opportunity to read an article he wrote for the Independence Day Speech, you would undoubtedly think it originated from Mugabe. It had all the usual nonsense of blaming the west, sovereignty bla-bla-bla, etc, etc .... And those of us who where at the UZ at his time knows very well he is power hungry. He went to the extent of having the running Student leader removed from Office so he could take over as Student Rep. President. And he did.

So what more can you expect, l pity those who support and entrust their political aspirations in such a person. Maybe he is surviving on that his past is little known and people see his academic achievements before his leadership integrity.

So, What do you think about the developments in the Zimbabwe power sharing talks? Have your say by posting your comments.

Botswana President to boycot SADC summit if no Zimbabwe Deal

>> 14 August 2008

Botswana's President Seretse Khama Ian Khama will not attend the SADC summit in South Africa this weekend if Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu PF party and the opposition MDC fail to reach a power-sharing agreement, Botswana officials have said.

Zimbabwe's rival parties have so far failed to agree on a power-sharing deal. There is growing pressure in the Southern Africa region on Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to secure an agreement that will end the current political crisis in Zimbabwe.

"If there is no agreement on the government in Zimbabwe, the president will not attend the summit," Chris Maribe, Director of Information at Botswana's foreign ministry, told Reuters

Which way now Zimbabwe?

A few days back, our hopes were high that finally there will be a power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe. A deal that could bring a end to the political and economic crisis in the country. What do you think about the current situation in the country?

Africa Tourism Association re-admits Zimbabwe

But is Zimbabwe getting attractive again as a tourist destination?

Zimbabwe has been re-admitted into the Africa Tourism Association, an American based organisation that seeks to promote tourism on the continent. This follows intense marketing through the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Perception Management Programme.

Zimbabwe had over the years been left out of programmes organised by the Association following intense negative publicity by hostile countries, ZTA chief executive officer Mr Karikoga Kaseke said.

He said the American based association was impressed after reading some articles from media organisations that would have interviewed opinion leaders who visited the country through the Perception Management Programme.

American RnB singer Joe Thomas, Jamaican singer Luciano, Russian Billionaire and owner of Chelsea Football Club Roman Abramovich are some of the high profile personalities to have visited Zimbabwe.

But we must be real, no matter how much we want the Zimbabwe tourism sector to get back on track, there are a lot of things that need to be right before we start seeing tourists coming back to Zimbabwe like before.

The political situation has to be right, the economic situation has to be addressed. Otherwise Zimbabwe will miss-out from the expected tourism boom brought about to the region when World Cup 2010 comes to South Africa.

Zimbabwe: Tsvangirai gets back his travel documents

The Zimbabwe government has returned opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai's travel documents on Thursday to enable him to travel to South Africa for a key regional meeting, a party spokesman said.

"The passport situation has just been resolved. They have their passports now. They will be leaving for South Africa on the 6 p.m flight. There was no explanation," MDC Official and Media adviser Andrew Chadwick said to Reuters."

Zimbabwe authorities had earlier confiscated Tsvangirai's travel documents and passports of MDC officials.

Tsvangirai has been invited to attend the weekend Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) summit to be hosted by South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is mediating talks between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai.

Morgan Tsvangirai is using emergency travelling documents after the Zimbabwe authorities refused to renew his passport when it expired in June.

Asked by reporters if he is still optimistic on a deal, Tsvangirai said: "Oh, yes of course, we got our independence after how many talks? Hundreds and tens of meeting had been held."

Power-sharing talks have been going on in Zimbabwe, but so far the rival parties have failed to strike a deal.

"I'm there(at the talks) to protect the will of the people and we are taking a principled stand. I maintain a principled stand to defend the will of the people,! Tsvangirai said on Thursday.

Cross-Border shopping provides life-line to Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe now rely on thousands of cross-border shoppers who go to countries like South Africa, Botswana and now even Mozambique to buy basic commodities. The government does not seem to know how to solve the food situation. Recently the government introduced a food hampers scheme, which does not seem to have helped the food situation in the country.

Zimbabwe's Internet Grocery shops have also helped the food situation in the country by providing access to Zimbabweans in the diaspora to buy food for their families back home.

Now, in an effort to improve the food situation in the country, the government has suspended import duty on basic commodities. Zimbabwe is now an economy supported by imported goods from other countries.

According to a statutory Instrument in an Extra-Ordinary government Gazette, the Minister of Finance, Samuel Mumbengegwi suspended duty on cooking oil, margarine, rice, flour, salt, bath and laundry soap among other products.

The Zimbabwean economy is now being sustained by cross-border shoppers. Some people now do their monthly shopping in South Africa or Botswana. Some go to Mozambique for their shopping. How things have changed in Zimbabwe?
Cross-border shoppers go through some difficult times in their journeys but they have to sustain their families.

Import Duty has also been suspended on the following products, washing powder, tooth paste, petroleum jelly, maize flour, wheat flour and beauty or make-up products. The suspension will run until 31st of December.

No doubt this will be welcome relief to Zimbabwe's cross border shoppers, but what about the future of the local industry. The government has realised that it has failed the people of Zimbabwe. Which way now Zimbabwe?

Is Arthur Mutambara desperate for power?

>> 13 August 2008

The leader of the smaller faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, Arthur Mutambara, is said to have come to a sort of deal with Robert Mugabe to form a Government of National Unity, which excludes Morgan Tsvangirai the MDC president.

Is Mutambara desperate for power, or he is right to deal with Mugabe?

After the disputed elections on March 29, which the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai won, Mutambara agreed to form an alliance with the other faction led by Tsvangirai. Now he is switching sides, has he been offered something that is too good to miss?

Mutambara has said the rival leaders had "agreement on everything except one aspect". "Morgan Tsvangirai has requested time to reflect and consult,"Mutambara said to reporters. "Three times he agreed to this one aspect and three times he changed his mind."

So, What is this one aspect? Why can't he just say it and let the people decide, if indeed Tsvangirai is indecisive or he is right to consult?

Zimbabwe: Morgan Tsvangirai still committed to talks

Movement for Democratic Change President, Morgan Tsvangirai has said he is still committed to Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks after three days of talks with Zanu PF's Robert Mugabe broke down without a deal.
Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe's post election government should be based on the March 29 elections.

"The MDC remained committed to participating in an meaningful and genuine dialogue that urgently moves this process forward.

We are committed to a solution that recognizes that the people spoke on the 29th of March 2008..a solution that ensures tangible deliverables are put on the table for Zimbabweans. A solution must thus put the people first, not leadership positions and titles."

Whatever is happening at those talks, at least Tsvangirai is right. It's about Zimbabwean people and their welfare. Someone should remind Mutambara about that.

Zimbabwe: No Deal between Mugabe and Mutambara

Zimbabwe's talks to negotiate a power sharing deal have broken down without an agreement, contrary to earlier reports of a deal between Robert Mugabe and the MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara.
The talks include Robert Mugabe, Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara the leader of the smaller MDC faction.

Earlier a Zanu PF official had said President Robert Mugabe and Arthur Mutambara's faction had reached a deal that would lead to a new government which exclude Morgan Tsvangirai.

This was however denied by Welshman Ncube, spokesman for the breakaway MDC faction, who said: "No deal has been signed by anyone, Dialogue is still continuing."

Talks mediator, South African President Thabo Mbeki had also said earlier that he was not aware if a deal had been signed between Mugabe and Mutambara.

It is not yet known when talks will resume again. For now, my fellow Zimbabweans, we have to wait and hope.

Have your say, I'm always interested in what you have to say.

Zimbabwe rivals failed to agree on power-sharing deal

Latest in Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks:

- Thabo Mbeki left Zimbabwe on Wednesday with no Deal.
- Morgan Tsvangirai said to be considering his options.
- Mugabe thought to have signed a deal with Arthur Mutambara, but Thabo Mbeki said he is not sure if that has been signed.

South African President Thabo Mbeki left Zimbabwe on Wednesday after failing to secure a power-sharing deal between Zimbabwe's main rivals, Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai.
However Mugabe is said to have made a deal with Arthur Mutambara, the leader of the other smaller MDC faction.

President Mbeki said negotiations had not broken down, but Mugabe had only reached an agreement with the leader of the break away MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara and he was unsure whether that had been signed either.

Mbeki said Tsvangirai was still looking at his options.

President Mbeki headed for Angola to meet President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, head of the political department of Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is worried about the impact of a possible meltdown in Zimbabwe.

Deadlock in Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks

>> 12 August 2008

There is still No Deal as to who will rule Zimbabwe.

The third day of power-sharing talks between Zanu PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change have ended without an agreement on Tuesday. However a Senior MDC official has said the talks between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai may resume on Wednesday.

Dialogue is a source of inspiration to all Zimbabweans and our only hope for an end to the political and economic crisis in the country.

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Secretary-General, Tendai Biti told reporters the talks would "most likely", saying the talks have not collapsed resume on Wednesday. It's just a time out".

He added, "There is nothing that can not be overcome".

A Zanu PF official earlier claimed the power-sharing talks were in danger of failure, saying: "Tsvangirai is moving goal posts, forcing us to negotiate issues we have already agreed upon."

An MDC official said both sides were reluctant to accept a compromise that would see Mugabe stay on as head of state but hand over power to the opposition.

He added: "Mugabe is refusing to accept that if he is head of state as accepted by the opposition MDC, then Tsvangirai has to be the head of government."

"It's now upto president Mbeki to plot the way forward but the issue is that Tsvangirai has refused to sign an agreement that will not recognise him as the head of government. We can't move from that position, so there is a deadlock."

Which way now Zimbabwe? Have your say by posting your comments.

Botswana deported Zimbabwe journalists accused of fueling political violence

A Zimbabwean journalists deported from Botswana this week had repeatedly attacked the opposition Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) and other pro-democracy activists for daring to challenge Robert Mugabe during the recent controversial elections in Zimbabwe. He is charged by the European Union for contributing to the Zimbabwe election terror campaign.

Caeser Zvayi, former political editor of the government owned Herald newspaper had taken up a teaching post as a print journalism lecturer at a private University in Botswana.

Zvayi and Munyaradzi Humi who also worked for the Herald joined Mugabe and about 140 of his close associates on a sanctions list drawn by the European Union. Zvayi is said to have regularly repeated the Zanu PF line that the MDC and it's supporters are puppets of the West.

For someone who glorified and embraced everything that Robert Mugabe's government is doing in Zimbabwe, isn't it strange that Zvayi decided to run from the economic problems in Zimbabwe for a better life in Botswana?

It's good that he can now go and live in Zimbabwe like a true patriot he is. These are the same state journalist who referred to all those who have left Zimbabwe as cowards. You got it Mr Zvayi, you can now go and live in your land of milk and honey. I guess like everyone else you now hope for a quick deal in the power-sharing talks.

Bulawayo: Woman strips naked, threatens to urinate into a cup of sugar

A woman in Zimbabwe's city of Bulawayo has found herself in trouble after she stripped naked and threaten to urinate into a cup of sugar after she was denied keys to the toilet. Judith Nyathi(28) of Nketa who is employed by Fawcet Security is being charged with public indecency, she pleaded not guilty when she appeared before a Bulawayo Magistrate.

In her defence, submitted by her, Mr Mweli Ncube of Cheda and Partners Legal Practitioners, Nyathi said she wanted to go to the toilet and went to the control room to get keys but the guards refused with the keys.

"The accused insisted that she was under pressure and she wanted to answer to the call of nature but the guards unreasonably refused with the keys," submitted Mr Ncube.

Nyathi is said to have waited for 20 minutes but when the other guards refused to give in, she threatened to use the cup to relieve herself.

"The accused in order to express her urgency and seriousness of visiting the loo, jokingly went behind the counter and pretended to be squatting on the cup. The complainant did not see any part of the accused's covered body, unless they have X-Ray eyes which penetrates opaque objects," said Ncube

All the trouble just for keys to the toilet? It was easy for the other guards to give her the keys, isn't it? Have your say by posting your comments.

Zimbabwe: To Deal or Not to Deal! as Make-or-break talks resume in Harare

So, Why is it taking all this long for Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai to agree on this power-sharing deal that will end the political crisis in Zimbabwe?

Media speculation had raised hopes of a deal being signed by the past weekend, but nothing happened. President Mugabe said, there has been progress and a deal was likely. But now Robert Mugabe is under pressure to deal!

The problem seems to be POWER. It must mean everything to these politicians, but what about the ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe?

To the ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe, the power-sharing deal seems to be the only hope out of this miserable situation. Who would want to be in Zimbabwe at this time? There is a sever shortage of basic commodities in Zimbabwe, supermarkets are empty and recently the government suspended import duty on basic commodities. Is that the answer to all these food shortages?

Maybe in the short term, but what about the viability of local industries and the welfare of those workers who will find themselves out of employment when local industries are forced to shut down.

Zanu PF and the MDC resume power-sharing talks today(Tuesday) after two days of negotiations failed to produce a deal.

The main sticking issues seems to be, whether Mugabe is willing to give up his executive powers and take up a more ceremonial role, as for Morgan Tsvangirai, how much power should he get. Does he become the executive prime minister?

And what about those key issues of security forces?

We just hope these leaders will see sense and come to an agreement. The people of Zimbabwe have suffered and continue to suffer today, it's time all this comes to an end.

FC Bayern Munich sign Zimbabwe International Joseph Ngwenya

German giants and former European champions, Bayern Munich have signed Zimbabwe International Joseph Ngwenya.
Ngwenya signed a 3 year deal for an undisclosed fee from Austria Bundesliga club, SK Austria Karnten. Ngwenya was on trial at Bayern for three weeks, however he will not be featuring for Bayern this season as he was loaned to Turkisk club Antalyaspor.

Ngwenya's move to the German Bundesliga started a long way in January when he moved to Austria's Bundesliga. There was much speculation at the time that Klinsman might have been behind the driving force behind Josephn Ngwenya's move to Europe. After all he was going to take over at Bayern......were he is now the manager.

Bayern Munich coach, Jurgen Klinsman was impressed by the striker's performance when they met at Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.
Klinsman was the vice-president of an American consultancy firm when he began to work within the structures of the LA Galaxy leading to his meeting with Joseph Ngwenya.

Zimbabwean players have always found it difficult to make it in the European leagues. However with the success of Benjani Mwaruwari at Manchester City and now Joseph Ngwenya joining Bayern Munich we hope this is the beginning of better things for Zimbabwean football. We have more talented players than the exposure they have had over the years.

Zimbabwe National team captain, Banjani Mwaruwari was delighted by Ngwenya move to Bayern.
"The first time I played with Joseph when he was called up for the national team I was struck by his great touch and professionalism. This couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. I am thrilled for him," reports quoted Mwaruwari.

It's Heroes Day in Zimbabwe today, the day we honour those who died in the country's war of liberation. In his Heroes Day speech, president Mugabe said they were reaching a consensus on the way forward in the power-sharing talks with the opposition rivals.

Power-sharing talks between Mugabe and the opposition leaders, Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara were set to resume later on Monday.

President Mugabe told his supporters in Harare today that there was progress in the power-sharing talks with opposition leaders.
A power-sharing deal could end the current political crisis in the country, and encouraging developments of a deal in the past few days have raised hopes of economic recovery in the troubled country.

South African president, Thabo Mbeki is mediating in the power-sharing talks.

"We had a long night negotiating on some little hurdles and I thought I should raise my fist but he(Thabo Mbeki) remained cool and said: 'let us continue talking', President Mugabe said in his address at the National Heroes Day celebrations.

Deal or No Deal? No Deal in Zimbabwe power-sharing talks

Deal or No Deal? ......."No deal!" say Robert Mugabe.

Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe said that 14 hours of power-sharing talks with opposition leaders have ended inconclusively. However President Mugabe said talks will resume today(Monday) and he was "confident" that a deal could be reached.

Morgan Tsvangirai did not comment as he left the hotel after the meeting, saying he expected South African President Thabo Mbeki to release a press statement on the negotiations.

Asked by reporters after 14 hours of negotiations if there had been progress, President Mugabe said, "Not yet. We are not through but we will continue tomorrow(Monday)".

The key issue at the talks is how much power president Robert Mugabe will hold and what role Morgan Tsvangirai will play.

There has been media speculation that the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai would become an executive prime minister and Mugabe a ceremonial president.

We all hope Zanu PF and the opposition MDC are getting closer to a power-sharing deal that will end this political crisis in Zimbabwe. But how are they going to solve the key issues of the security forces?

Mugabe and Tsvangirai close to power sharing deal

It is encouraging every time there are indications that Zanu PF and the MDC are close agreeing on a power-sharing deal that will bring an end to the political crisis in Zimbabwe.

President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai will hold make or break talks in Harare on Sunday aimed at finalising a power sharing deal, a South African newspaper said on Friday.

But is the Zimbabwe power-sharing deal close?

Business Day, citing unnamed sources, said it is understood Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai were not "too far from apart" even though the central issues remain unresolved.

South African President, Thabo Mbeki is expected to fly to Harare for the talks on Saturday or Sunday, Business Day said.

Because not much information officially comes from within the negotiating parties, the people of Zimbabwe continue to rely on media speculation. But, we just hope there is an end insight to the problems affecting our country.

Let the Olympics Games begin!

Beijing Olympics, hailed as the most ambitious in history were officially opened today with the most spectacular opening ceremony. A TV audience of about 3 billion watched as 35 000 fireworks were pumped into the sky.
Games spokesman Sun Weide said: "We hope this will be the greatest ever Olympics."

The ceremony began at precisely 8.08pm on 08/08/08, the luckiest moment of the Chinese calendar.

Now it's time to let the games be a sporting event and not a political issue. There maybe political issues to do with China, but isn't it best not to mix politics with sports?

There has also been a lot of noise made regarding the pollution in Beijing, well some commentators have also highlighted that the smog in Los Angels was bad but the media did not report about it. So probably it's just time to let the athletes show their talents.

It was nice to see our Zimbabwe represented at the official opening ceremony, even though our President, Robert Mugabe did not attend. It was reported a few days back that he was not welcome at the Beijing Olympics.

Lets hope we get something out of these games. Good luck to all athletes, if we don't win anything....representing Zimbabwe is still good enough.

Robert Mugabe: "It's utter nonsense"

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has said power-sharing talks with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) were going well. However he dismissed media reports about details of an agreement as nonsense.

Zimbabweans turn to 'barter' trade as the dollar is now valueless

>> 07 August 2008

Zimbabweans are now trading in litres, the dollar is now useless. Coupons have become are now the new currency, reflecting the rapidly falling value of the Zimbabwean dollar.
In a move which reflect the chaos in the country's financial sector, Zimbabweans have now turned to a new money source....fuel coupons. Prices are openly quoted in American dollars even though the country introduced new smaller denomination banks notes last week, a move which saw coins return to circulation after being abandoned a long time ago.

Auctioneers Hammer and Tongues announced the first auction by barter to be held on Friday. At least barter selling provides something that holds value!

Cars and other goods will be up for bids payable in fuel coupons instead of hard currency and the government has said the system is legal.

"Homegrown solutions for Zimbabweans. Now we are selling in litres not in dollars," said Hammer and Tongues.
Bidders must put down a deposit of 1000 litres of fuel coupons, worth about US$1500.00 and pay the rest in coupons when they pick up their purchases.

Things are indeed falling apart in Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe and his government have managed to destroy a once prosperous country and now we are going back to the stone age days. Is it time to say enough is enough?

ZBC DJ suspended over interview with Chiyangwa

ZBC Power FM DJ Munyaradzi Milimo was last month suspended after an interview with business mogul and former ZANU PF MP Philip Chiyangwa on air in the run up to the June 27 presidential election re-run, a Zimbabwe newspaper reported over the weekend.
The popular DJ, better known as DJ Munya who broadcasts from Pockets Hills in Harare, was suspended from the station "because he invited into the studio an unauthorised guest".

Citing unnamed sources, The Zimbabwe Standard newspaper said the DJ was shocked to be suspended since the interview had been sanctioned by management, but the young DJ was allegedly made a sacrificial lamb after pressure from the 'big guys'.

The paper said the problem started when an influential bigwig told the Power FM management that the 25-minute interview with Chitangwa was politically wrong because of it's timing.
After the show, the DJ was handed the suspension letter, which was faxed from the station's head office in Gweru.

ZBC accuses DJ Munya of prejudicing ZBC of trillions of dollars through free advertising.

"DJ Munya prejudiced ZBH of $76 Trillion dollars through free advertising for a local nightclub. It is a very serious offence. NO one is indispensable at ZBH and acts of indiscipline and insubordination will not be tolerated," said Sivukile Simango, ZBH public relations officer to the Standard newspaper.

DJ Munya plays at a famous Harare club called Globe Trotters, and owns an advertising media company.

Zanu PF and MDC call for end in violence

>> 06 August 2008

In a sign of positive developments in Zimbabwe, the ruling party Zanu PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) have called on their supporters to end political violence in the country. This is the most tangible sigh of progress since the power sharing talks began in South Africa two weeks ago.

The two parties in a joint statement urged their supporters and members and any organs and structures under the direction and control of the respective parties to stop and desist from the perpetration of violence in any form.

It is encouraging that both Zanu PF and MDC are realistically looking for solutions to the Zimbabwe crisis.

For all those who watched last night's UK Channel 4 news would have seen a very disturbing video on the violence being perpetrated by Zanu PF militias on suspected MDC supporters. That is no way to treat a human being, whatever the reason. Life is very precious.

Zimbabwe women resort to selling sex to survive

>> 04 August 2008

Desperate Zimbabwe women struggling to cope under the harsh economic problems facing the country have resorted to selling sex to survive. It has been reported that Zimbabwean women are crossing into Mozambique were they engage into prostitution for their survival.
This has resulted in an increase in HIV/Aids infections in Mozambique, according to Unicef.

Unicef is concerned by high levels of HIV/Aids infection in Mozambique pushed by unsafe sex practices. Unicef director, Ann Venemann, told reporters at the end of her three day official visit to Mozambique that her organisation "was concerned by high levels of HIV infection in the country".

"We are working with the ministry of interior in dealing with uncontrolled immigration of Zimbabwean women who are engaged in sexual activities in central Mozambique," said Venemann.

Zimbabwe's economy is in crisis, there is a general shortage of most basic commodities and the continued political crisis is pushing most Zimbabweans into desperate activities to survive.

HIV/Aids cases are also on an increase in Zimbabwe were thousands have lost their lives because of the deadly virus. A Lot of children have been orphaned and some of them now look after their young siblings.

If the problems in the country are not resolved quickly, this is going to reverse all the gains from programs that were introduced to educate the people about the dangers of HIV/Aids, as people resort to desperate means of survival.

Coins and new bank notes cause more confussion in Zimbabwe

Instead of relief, chaos and confusion is the order of the day in Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans hunted for coins stashed away years ago in jars and cupboards and headed for the shops were long queues have been forming as till operators used to counting notes, struggle to count the bags and tins full of coins.

The re-introduction of coins has come as a relief to all those people who had coins but didn't know what to do with them. It's like a bonus!
This has also bought a bit more money in circulation, but is this going to solve the cash problems in the country?

However things are not right in Zimbabwe. All these new measures are just desperate attempts to save a sinking titanic. Will they succeed? Not so sure.

The economy is confused, the people managing the economy seem to be drunk and now they have managed to cause confusion in the whole country.

In supermarkets, till operators used to counting loads of notes now have to deal with bags of coins. Besides the pain of counting them...I guess some of the coins will not be that clean. But does the government care about the health of those handling these coins?

The biggest denomination note is $500, equivalent to $5 trillion in the old denominations. The old bank notes remain effective until December.

Zimbabwe Dollar notes for sale on eBay

>> 02 August 2008

It's a real strange World! Zimbabwe's 100 billion Dollar bank note which is not even enough to buy you a loaf of bread in Harare is being sold for as much as £70 on auction site eBay.

Who would buy these valueless Zimbabwean bank notes?

Apparently Zimbabwe's new bank notes seem to be sought after by collectors, especially the 100 billion note. Zimbabwe's billion dollar bank notes have more value as novelty items on eBay than what you can get in Zimbabwe.

If you can sale them, it's more profitable to sale these notes on eBay than go to work in Zimbabwe. God help us!

Meanwhile the reserve bank of Zimbabwe governor, Mr Gideon Gono announced new monetary policy measures in an effort to bring sanity to the chaos in the business sector, these include removing 10 zeros from the country's currency and also introducing new bank notes.
These is meant to help the country's business sector, whose computer systems could not cope with billion and trillion figures.

You would feel sorry for the senior citizens, I wonder how they are managing with these high denomination billion and trillions? It's a shame!

New smaller denomination bank notes have been introduced, and they will surely make transactions easier to conduct. But as long as the government keeps cranking up more new bank notes, the value of the dollar will keep going down.

Time to take out the old piggy bank!

Zimbabwe has gone back to using the old coins......desperate times in the country. Suddenly all those coins that people had discarded are now worth billions or trillions.....it's now time to look for all those old coins that had been condemned to the museums, but what can you buy with them?

But what is the reasoning behind the decision to go back to the old coins?

Is it that Robert Mugabe's government can not afford to print anymore money? It was reported that the Germany firm, Giesecke and Devrient GmbH, which was printing some of Zimbabwe's money had stopped doing so. Tough times indeed!

What next for Robert Mugabe's government? How long will his government survive? Don't think it will be long though, You can rig an election or use violence, but you can't rig an economy.
All the zeros than the reserve bank have removed will surely come back, it's a matter of time.

Cheaper ways to phone Zimbabwe

>> 01 August 2008

Calling friends, family or lovers back home can be very expensive. Especially with some of the phone cards on the market giving you less than advertised talk time. It can also be even more expensive calling from your home phone or mobile phone. However there are other cheaper ways you can talk to people in other countries including Zimbabwe and can even be FREE.

The easiest is PC to PC talk....You need to have Internet connection and a headset with a microphone that you can plug into the PC, download free software such as Skype, connect to each other and start talking.

It is also possible to make cheap calls from your home phone by taking advantage of specialist cheap overseas 'override' phone companies. This is one service that I use, the advantage is that I do not need any account or to go out and by a phone card. It is sometimes comparatively cheaper than phone cards.

I have done a quick check using the International Call Checker tool and found a number of companies with cheaper call rates to Zimbabwe.

'Override' phone companies give you an access number which you then use every time you want to make calls to an international number from your home phone. There are different companies which offer these services and also the prices change from time to time.

Use the international call checker service by Money Saving Expert to check for cheap call providers to Zimbabwe and any other international destination you want to call.

You can also get an access number to call mobile phones in Zimbabwe, but personally I avoid these if I can use a land line because they are cheaper. It is also advisable to to double-check prices on provider's websites before calling.

For phone cards to Zimbabwe and other countries, ComFi phone cards provide lowest long distance rates around the globe
