Morgan Tsvangirai won the Zimbabwe presidential election

>> 30 April 2008

Latest in the Zimbabwe election circus! Mugabe down but not out. We have been waiting for the results of the presidential election for a month now. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission did not gives us the results of the elections, even the courts of law refused to force the commission to give us the results. So, is it just by coincedence that the government has decided to leak the results of the presidential election a day before the begining of the verification process?

According to reuters news agency, a senior government official has said that Morgan Tsvangirai won the presidential election in Zimbabwe with 47 percent of the total vote against Robert Mugabe's 43 percent. Crucially that leaves Tsvangirai short of the majority needed to avoid an election run-off against Mugabe. But can Zimbabwe afford another election?

This is probably nothing new. We have always known that Tsvangirai won the presidential election. The results have been in the public domain ever since they were posted at different polling stations after the elections held in Zimbabwe on 29 March.

Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC have always said that he won the election, but if the leaked results are a true reflection of what is to come. Then we are set for another round of elections. But can we afford the election re-run? Probably not. Ever since Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF lost it's majority in parliament, and they laso realised he had lost to Tsvangirai in the presidential vote. There has been reported cases of violance against opposition supporters. The opposition MDC have already said that 20 of their members have been killed by pro-government militias.

Zimbabwe can also not afford the financial costs of the election run-off. Given the state of our economy, this will probably destroy whatever is left of the economy already in meltdown. So if we can not afford the re-run, then what's the way forward? Probably to let the winner of the last election be the new leader of the country.

So what was the reason behind the election results delay? The only logical reason is because Mugabe lost the presidential election. The delay was probably meant to play around with figures thus resulting in the impending election re-run.

Reserve Bank floats Zimbabwe Dollar on forex market

Zimbabwe's Central Bank governor Mr Gedion Gono has announced new foreign exchange rules in an attempt to eliminate speculation and help stop the black market. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has with immediate effect introduced a willing buyer, willing seller policy and the country is moving away from the current fixed exchange rate policy.

Just when after I wrote an article asking where Mr Gedion Gono was, when all this madness was taking place in the Zimbabwean economy (you can read previous post here). He has announced a number of measures in his Monetary Policy statement. But this is nothing new as he always announce these Monetary Policy statements. Will he succeed this time around? Not under this current political climate in Zimbabwe.

Under this scheme, Authorised Dealers will match sellers and buyers of foreign currency using a predetermined priority list as set from time to time by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in consultation with different stakeholders in the different sectors of the economy.
The official exchange rate is currently pegged at ZW$30 000.00 to US$1, even though on the parallel market is trading at about ZW$190 million to US$1. The Zimbabwe dollar is also currently trading at ZW$370 million to one British pound.

The Zimbabwean economy has been on free fall for some years now. Inflation is estimated at 165 000 percent. 80 percent of the population is unemployed, and the unemployed few can barely afford to feed their families for just one week on their monthly salaries.
The country is faced with a total collapse of public services, their is a severe shortage of basic commodities, fuel, foreign currency. This is a country which was once the bread basket of Africa but now can barely feed it's citizens.

Are we any closer to the end of the circus of the Zimbabwe elections?

Verification of the presidential election results set for Thursday in the latest of the Zimbabwe Election Drama of 2008.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will submit the results of last month's presidential election to the ruling Zanu PF party and Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC to begin the verification process.
This is the final step before ZEC announces the results to the public. But it is very unlikely that Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe will agree to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission's results.

The two parties will compare the results they tallied from the different polling stations and the final Zimbabwe Electoral Commission count. Once all parties are satisfied they will sign verification forms and the results can be released.
However given all the circus that has been taking place over the past month since the election on 29 March, I doubt that we are any closer to a solution to the election circus.

The opposition MDC has already announced that Morgan Tsvangirai, and also many other Zimbabweans seem to share the same. So, what will happen if the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission announces a win result for Robert Mugabe? Obviously MDC will not accept that.
The same applies to Zanu PF, I'm almost certain they will not accept a win result for Morgan Tsvangirai. But I'm sure they will be happy with an election re-run, they know they lost the election and 'maybe' if given a second chance they maybe better equipped to steal the vote.

Zanu PF should not be let to steal the vote again, gracefully they should leave office for the better of Zimbabwe. The United Nations Security Council has refused to send a special envoy to try and end the Zimbabwe election circus and the humanitarian crisis developing in Zimbabwe.

Uniting forces against Mugabe

The two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have announced that they will be joining forces in parliament to form a majority against Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF. The presidents of the two MDC factions Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara announced at a press conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"It's our pleasure to announce that our two formations in parliament have agreed to work together," said Morgan Tsvangirai the president of the MDC speaking alongside Arthur Mutambara leader of the other MDC faction.
"There will be no divisions amongst ourselves vis-a-vis the resolution of the Zimbabwean crisis. I'm here to show solidarity to the winner of the presidential election in Zimbabwe," Said Arthur Mutambara in reference to Morgan Tsvangirai.

The two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have a combined total of 109 seats which gives them the majority in parliament and Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF 97 seats. The MDC has also declared that Morgan Tsvangirai won the presidential election.

The election defeat seems so hard to take for Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party as shown by their unwillingness to release the results of the elections. One month after Zimbabweans went to vote on 29 March, results of the all important presidential election are yet to be announced. Instead they have decided to carry out vote recounts, a process widely seen by the people as an attempt to rig the election results. Or are they just trying to delay the inevitable. Why don't they just retire and leave office graceful rather than going through all this humiliation and public ridicule and humiliation.

Have they no shame?

Was the 49th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair a success?

>> 28 April 2008

The just ended Zimbabwe International Trade Fair has been hailed a huge success. ZITF board chairman Mr Nhlanhla Masuku said he was impressed by the quality of the exhibitions and also the quality of the products. "We are beginning to see the affirmation of the indeginisation of the economy which is now largely run by Zimbabweans," said Mr Masuku. The theme of the fair this year was " Made in Zimbabwe for Africa and the World.
"ZITF A Big Success" was the leader article on the government owned Sunday Mail. But reading the article, there was nothing at all in it to show that the fair was a success.

In fact the article was all about complains by Mr Nhlanhla Masuku complaining about hotels over charging their customers to cash in on the 'popular' international event.
A bottle of coca cola costs $90 million (about £0.30) in a hotel, is it that expensive then considering a newspaper now costs $100 million.

Instead of just complaining, I think you should be telling us the real reasons why few and few exhibitors are coming to the fair each year. You should tell us why the number of visitors is also falling? Not that we already don't know, but at least you should be pointing the blame where it lies.
Minister of Industry and International Trade, Obert Mpofu dubbed it the "Pride of African Trade". No way Mr Minister when only exhibitors from Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania so it fit to come. Not even all the members of SADC so it fit to exhibit this this you call pride of Africa fair.

"Zimbabwe is not for sale and it will never be a colony again" this seem to be a popular phrase in Zimbabwe with our dear leader these days. BUT who is selling Zimbabwe? If say someone is selling it, will anyone be prepared to buy this country? Maybe I will try selling it on Ebay and see if anyone is prepared to bid for it.

However like every other Zimbabwean I would also want to see things changing in Zimbabwe. We can't go on and on like this, one day our troubles shall come to pass and even the trade fair will be a big success again. Even these people like the ZITF board chairman wish for change that's why they lie about the things on the ground.
But for now maybe they should call it the Zimbabwe International Trade Failure.

In God We Trust.

The World's most expensive mobile phone calls

Welcome to Zimbabwe were a mobile phone call will cost you a minimum of $4 million dollars per minute. The country of millions or is it billions, but we are now dealing in trillions. We should ask Mr Gono, why things have come to this? The country's budget figures are in trillions, our Sunday newspaper will cost you $100 million, now our mobile phone charges are about $4 million per minute. WOW! I give up, we should stop using this Zimbabwean dollar. It's embarrassing, a total disgrace.

The facts, Econet Wireless customers using Buddie will now have to pay $4 091 722.00 per minute. Calls to other networks, that is NetOne and Telecel will cost even more.
International calls to to fixed receivers in United Kingdom, Belgium and other European countries cost about $7 million per minute.

Calls to international mobile phones cost a minimum of $7 319 769.00 per minute. If you find the large figures a bit confusing, well feel sorry for the people of Zimbabwe who have to deal with these figures everyday. Zimbabwe if full of billionaires who have nothing to show for it. The majority ca not afford three decent meals a day. Yet our dear leaders were in the news recently buying guns and bombs from their Chinese friends. Have they no shame?

$100 million Newspaper

Where else in the world can you buy a newspaper for 100 million dollars? It only has to be in Zimbabwe. The country of many zeros. Surely can you buy all that propaganda for $100 million? I wouldn't, can anyone else tell me which other country has got such expensive newspapers?

Zimbabwe newspapers group has announced new prices for it's newspapers. The Herald, Chronicle and Manica Post will now cost $80 million dollars, Sunday News $90 million and the Sunday Mail costs $100 million. Crazy! even Kwayedza will cost you $40 million.

How can we really explain the situation in Zimbabwe today? If a newspaper cost $100 000 000.00, how much should the people be earning then? How worse can things get for the people of Zimbabwe before the current regime realise they are doing more harm to the economy with everyday they are in office?

Is it not time to throw in the towel? YES I think it's time to give Morgan a chance, he has been beaten big time and he does not give up.

Zanu PF candidate blames Mugabe for his defeat

>> 27 April 2008

Tell then General!

Here is something that we knew all along, but for reasons best known to some Zanu PF people they found it very difficult to admit. Now someone has had the courage to confirm it.
The losing Zanu PF candidate for Gutu constituency, General Vitalis Zvinavashe has blamed president Robert Mugabe for the party's poor performance in Masvingo province. " There is no need to fight over these results, we must accept that we have lost these elections to MDC. What is important is to live together in peace, both losers and winners. We do not want violence in this area. We are relatives", said general Zvinavashe.

According to General Zvinavashe, most Zanu PF candidates lost not because they are not popular in their areas. The main reason is that one man at the top. YES Mr President.
The vote recount in Masvingo failed to change the previously announced election results and Zvinavashe urged other losing Zanu PF candidates to accept that they lost and learn to live with it.
General Zvinavashe the former army commander once said he will never salute Morgan Tsvangirai if he become president of Zimbabwe.

Was this vote recount necessary at all? I feel this was a pure waste of resources that the country can not even afford to. Shows how politicians are prepared to be selfish just to cling to power. They don't care the damage their actions will cause to the general public. So should we take what General Zvinavashe to mean that Mugabe himself should also accept the reality that he lost to Morgan Tsvangiarai and live happily with it. No need to fight and kill your relatives, tell them again general.

Nowhere to hide as police raid MDC headquarters

>> 26 April 2008

Dozens of armed riot police have raided the offices of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Reports from Harare say riot police detained about 100 MDC supporters. This is the biggest crackdown on the MDc since the elections held on 29 March, that the opposition MDC says it defeated president Mugabe. Zanu PF lost it's majority in parliament to the opposition MDC for the first time in 28 years.

Nearly one month after the elections that were held on March 29, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has not released the results of the all important presidential election. Instead Mugabe's Zanu PF party has called for a vote recount which is currently underway in 23 constituencies of which 21 were previously won by Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC. This is widely seen as an attempt by Zanu PF and Mugabe to cling to power by reversing the results previously announced to give Zanu PF the majority in parliament which it lost to the opposition MDC.

The delay in announcing the election results has caused tension, anxiety, stress and anger in Zimbabwean communities where people already know the results which were posted at various polling stations. Zanu PF supporters and government militias are said to be unleashing violence against opposition supporters in a move to make them vote for Zanu PF and Robert Mugabe in the event of the widely expected election re-run.
There are rumours that the election re-run will be held on the weekend of 24 May.

MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa said, "among those among those MDC supporters detained by the police are supporters fleeing violence in different parts of the country. They are said to have come to the party headquarters to seek protection, shelter and medical assistance.
But the police accuse some of these supporters of committing crime and then seeking refuge at the MDC headquarters.

He was given three two month jail terms and a three and half year driving ban.

Where is Mr Gono as the monetary problems get worse in Zimbabwe?

Anyone knows whether the Reserve Bank governor is still at work? It's been a long time since we have heard from him. The Zimbabwean dollar has been on free fall against major currencies. Now trading at about one British pound to 230 million Zimbabwean dollars. The economy is in free fall, there doesn't seem to be a solution to the cash problems in the banks. Inflation is estimated to be over 150 000 percent, which some say is a more conservative figure. Is there anyone in charge of the monetary system in Zimbabwe?

He used to appear everywhere, even spearheading the government's Operation Maguta Scheme, meant to provide more food to the people after the food shortages caused by the land invasions. I used wonder what the governor was doing spending time in the farms as if he was an agricultural officer. He used to involve himself in events in nearly every other ministry, so what has happened now? Has he finally realised that Zimbabwe is a bigger problem that he can not probably solve?

First there was Sunrise 1 and then there was sunrise 2, all in an effort to solve the Zimbabwean crisis. Did he achieve his objectives? Big NO! Zimbabwe is even worse of. He even rewarded the people of Zimbabwe with a new $50 million bank note. Now you can note even calculators when dealing with these Zimbabwean notes. There are just too many zeros on the notes. He even tried removing those zeros, and again that did not help. Oh! Mr Gono, what happened to the much talked about saviour of the Zimbabwean economy?

Do you remember him and his homelink project? We new that was never going to succeed it was another ploy to get the all important foreign currency from Zimbabweans in the diaspora.
"Dr Gono is a celebrated patriot who has done all he can to assist the government to keep our ship on course amid holes punctured by MDC and it's Western allies through economic sabotage and heinous sanctions" said Adv Martin Dinha in an address to Zanu PF mayors.

Hopefully Mr Gono is working on better plans to pull Zimbabwe out of this economic mess.

Cry, Our Beloved Zimbabwe

>> 24 April 2008

As the evil ship carrying weapons of mass destruction is stranded in the South African coast, there are cries for 'freedom' everywhere in Zimbabwe today. The once prosperous country full of happy people has now turned into an unwanted hunger and disease stricken country. The economy is in shambles, the country is in crisis because the ruling party does not want to release the results of the elections which everyone else besides Zanu PF believe Mugabe lost. The Zimbabwe government has now turned to acquiring weapons of mass destruction, to destroyed the same people whom they want us to believe they voted for Mugabe to remain in power. The same people whom they want us to believe they still want them to be in power. Can anyone out there here the cries of the Zimbabwean people? Probably NOT! God help us!

In the latest episode of the Zimbabwe election circus, there is more confusion and uncertainty as to what tomorrow may hold for the suffering Zimbabweans. At the end of the day what matters is the welfare of the Zimbabwean people. Politicians are a greedy lot who only care for themselves and they are prepared to do anything to remain in power. Even buying more weapons of mass destruction whilst hunger, starvation and diseases ravages the country.
Is a government of national unity with Mugabe as president the answer to the current crisis?

Is it that the government of Zimbabwe do not see what they have done to the economy and the lives of Zimbabweans? NO, they have eyes to see, they have ears to hear but they just don't want to because they are not suffering like the masses. Whilst they continue to super size themselves eating all the food available in the country, the majority of the people have nothing to eat.

The Chinese government should be ashamed of themselves for selling weapons of mass distraction to the Zimbabwe government. The ship destined for Zimbabwe has been stranded in the South African coast and nobody wants to touch it, let alone be associated with it. The Chinese were allowed to come into our country, flood our country with those inferior plastic goods. They even dumped those rubbish buses in our country. Anyone remembers those buses which struggled to go over the small road humps in Glen View. They also brought those not so reliable planes. So, is this how the Chinese reward the people of Zimbabwe? Give the government weapons to kill it's own people.

Nobody in their right senses would sale weapons of war to Zimbabwe at this time when there is no war and the country is not under any threat from anyone. At a time when the people are suffering, all they need is food not guns. What do they need guns for after all there are no more animals to hunt, if we assume they want to give the people of Zimbabwe guns. But you do not need bombs when you go hunting?

Our neighbouring countries are right to refuse to be associated with this ship carrying weapons of mass distraction. Who knows, maybe the weapons will be used against these neighbouring countries. Political instability and civil strife in Zimbabwe will affect the whole region. So maybe South African president Thabo Mbeki should think of that as he keep saying things are okay in Zimbabwe. If things are okay, why is the Zimbabwe government buying weapons of war?

13 people arrested as penis theft panic hits Kinshasa

>> 23 April 2008

Police in Kinshasa have arrested 13 people suspected of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises. The arrests came after after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings caused by the alleged witchcraft in Congo.

Beliefs in witchcraft remains widespread in Africa where different ritual killings still occur. Rumours of penis theft began circulating last week and victims claimed a simple touch by these alleged sorcerers made their genitals shrink or disappear.

Some residents of Kinshasa think it's just a joke, but could this be real? Is it possible that someone can shrink or worse still make your genitals disappear?
Well, some residents of Kinshasa it's an attempt to extort cash with a promise of a cure.

Mugabe's Zanu retains Goromonzi seat in first vote recount result

Zanu PF has won the Goromonzi West seat in the first result of the partial vote recount announced by the electoral commission. The partial recount was ordered in 23 constituencies following the elections on 29 March.
Results are still expected in 22 more constituencies, Zanu PF is challenging the results in 21 constituencies that were won by Morgan Tsvangirayi's MDC.

Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF lost the majority in parliament to the opposition MDC in the elections held on March 29.
Whilst recounts were ordered in 21 constituencies won by the opposition MDC, after a complaint of irregularities and flaws in the electoral process by Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF party, Goromonzi west was one of only two districts to hold a recount were Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF won.

Many people see this vote recount as another ploy by the Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF party to reverse the results of the March 29 elections were they lost the majority in parliament for the first time since independence.
Given the current Zimbabwe election laws and the election commission that is controlled by Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF, does Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have the capacity to rig the electoral process in Zimbabwe? And again if the government's own appointed people are now rigging votes against the same government, does this not mean then that even Mugabe's own appointed people also want change. Is it possible that MDC really rigged election results in all those 21 constituencies?

Oh my God! Who would want to be a president of this country?

Today the Zimbabwean dollar is trading at $200 million to £1. Yes that's true, 200 million dollars for one British pound. Not at all surprising to most Zimbabweans. The Zimbabwean dollar as well as the whole economy has been on free fall, collapsing like a sand castle.

So who would want to be the captain of this sinking titanic? Unless one has a sound turn around strategy. So I'm surprised given the current state of affairs in the Zimbabwean economy some people still claim to be the best custodians of our economy. Given their track record in managing the economy they still want us to believe they are the best Zimbabwe have! Give us a break! They have failed us, why can't they just leave and let someone try and sort this mess?

So for every one pound you get 200 million Zimbabwean dollars?

Before you send your goods to Zimbabwe read this

>> 19 April 2008

It took Zimcargo 6 months to get my goods to Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe maybe miles away from England but I did not expect Zimcargo to take half a year to get my goods to Zimbabwe. Now to you my fellow Zimbabweans do not fall for this rubbish services from a certain Mr Nembaware and his zimcargo services like what happened to me.
Here is my story of my cargo which took 6 months to get to Harare and why I'm angry with this man and his company. In fact I can't even stand talking to him.

In November 2007 a certain Mr Nembaware from a company called zimcargo collected my goods to be delivered to my family in Harare. I paid him £192.00 and he promised that my goods will be delivered in 4 to 6 weeks time. Not 6 months.

The way this man talked about his company and the service they offer reminded me of insurance sales people.

The service I got from zimcargo is a disgrace. Personally I would advise anyone thinking about shipping goods to Zimbabwe to avoid this company. This will save you from all the embarrassment, stress and anger as well as the costs of phoning this man to follow up on your goods.
If you see his fliers throw them away or shred them so no one else falls for this rubbish service again. If you get text messages from him please just delete.

Getting him or his company on the phone is a pain. On the odd times that you do get him, he talks like he is a recorded message and will not give you a chance to talk, then he hangs up! How disgraceful!

Professionalism is one word which does not seem to be in his vocabulary. I could not believe he could put some one's website on his letterhead. On his confirmation letter he send to me he has got a website of another company also trading as zimcargo. So why is he promoting another competitor? Or is he trying to tarnish another company's image through his disgraceful service?

He did not even bother to respond to all the emails that I wrote to him, so what's the point of having his email address on his business letters?
Now he has seen it fit to send five texts of the same message to say my goods are now in Harare and ready for collection on Monday 21 April 2008. I wonder if it is over excitement on his part that he has finally managed to get the goods to Zimbabwe. Even though it took him 6 months.
He seems to be forgetting that he promised me that the goods will be delivered to my family's door step not for them to collect.

My advise to you my fellow Zimbabweans is to avoid this man Nembaware and his zimcargo company also trading as Crosswill Services. You may also want to let your friends and relatives know so they do not fall for the same rubbish and sh**t service.

Vote recount the next episode in the Zimbabwe elections circus

Can someone stop this madness! The whole election process has lost it's meaning and credibility. The Zimbabwe electoral commission has started a partial vote recount in 23 constituencies which is expected to last about three days. The outcome of the recount could change the previous announced results in which president Mugabe's Zanu PF lost the majority in parliament to Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

In whose interest is this vote recount? Zimbabweans went to the polls on 29 March, but up to now the results of the presidential election have not been announced. Now this recount is going to delay the results even more.

The opposition MDC have already said they do not accept this recount. I doubt the majority of Zimbabweans accept this recount either. Most people seem to believe that the opposition MDC won the elections. Otherwise the results could have been announced a long time ago.

Whatever the outcome of this recount, the people of Zimbabwe made a statement on 29 March. Whether the peoples decision will be respected is another matter. Now it seems if need be, guns will be used on them so they accept whatever result will be announced after the recount.

Is Zimbabwe at War?

>> 18 April 2008

On the day our country celebrates independence there are reports of a cargo ship carrying weapons destined for Zimbabwe from China. The ship is said to be carrying a large consignment of weapons of war. But why does Zimbabwe need weapons when there is no war in the country or any threat of war against the country? If there is any threat of war, maybe I stand to be corrected.

If these reports of the cargo ship with weapons of war from China being delivered to Zimbabwe are true, then I think it is being irresponsible of China to do that.
The people of Zimbabwe are suffering, there is hunger and starvation in the country, thousands of Zimbabweans are dying of malnutrition, thousands more are dying of diseases and there is no medication in the country.
So why waste whatever little money is available on weapons of war, and to fight who?

Independence Day celebrations gave another opportunity for the ordinary suffering people of Zimbabwe to be verbally abused by those in power. They are called all sorts of names and also British puppets. People attend the celebrations in numbers, are they happy with what is happening in the country?
It's so sad because they will have to go back to their usual suffering in their respective homes after the celebrations.

Now with the government buying more weapons, is there any future in Zimbabwe for the ordinary person? It's either you are with them or you are against them and sooner or later you will pay the price.
Surely one day all this will end, their judgement day shall come and the people of Zimbabwe will be FREE and happy again.

In God we trust!

Zimbabwe Independence Day Celebrations

>> 17 April 2008

The first elections in Zimbabwe took place on March 27-29, 1980. Zimbabwe Rhodesia gained it's independence as Zimbabwe on 18 April 1980. Independence celebrations were held at Rufaro stadium were Bob Marley sang 'Zimbabwe' a song he wrote at the government's invitation. This was after a long war against the white settlers. The independence of Zimbabwe was marked with joy and celebrations, and ever since Zimbabweans celebrate on 18 April of every year.
As we celebrate independence this year, I ask myself, are we really free in Zimbabwe? Are we really enjoying the fruits of liberation? What has gone wrong in our country, if there is any?

As we celebrate independence day on the 18th of April it's now exactly 20 days after the elections to choose the next Zimbabwe president. Still no results have not been announced and it does not look like we will ever get those results.
One of the reasons why the liberation war was fought was to ensure that the majority blacks can vote and choose whom they want to be the leader of the country. So are we enjoying the fruits of independence in this regard Zimbabwe? Where is your right to choose your leader?

If people were suffering during the colonial era, I don't know how to explain the situation now.

Are the people of Zimbabwe better-off now?

By associating the current election circus with the war of liberation, the government wants people to believe that they are better off now, is that so?

Independence is about not being subject to control by others, it's about Freedom and Individualism. So if I may ask, are we really independent in Zimbabwe? We are grateful to all those who fought to liberate Zimbabwe and give us this 'free' life. But are we not being controlled by these same people? 'being colonised by our own'.

Are we really free to exercise our constitutional rights?

The war of liberation was about ensuring equal and fair distribution of land and other national resources. So, is every Zimbabwean getting their fair share of the national cake? Is every Zimbabwean getting their fair share of the land? Land invasions maybe a sign that even all these years after independence land is not equally distributed in Zimbabwe. We still have white farmers owning large pieces of land, we have some few blacks owning more than one farms of the prime farming land whilst the majority remain in the same areas they were before independence.
So what is independence if we do not have the land that rightfully belong to us the majority.

On this occasion of our independence, what does the future hold for Zimbabwe? What type of celebrations are we going to have under the current circumstances?

- there is the mystery of the elections that probably were never meant to take place, if they were, were are the results? (see my previous post here)
- there is hunger and starvation in the country, there is a general collapse of public services.
- there is a shortage of basic commodities.
- people spend time in queues waiting for deliveries they don't even know when they come.
- inflation is said to be over 150 000 percent.
- we have the highest denomination note of ZW$50 million
- the economy is in a real mess with no signs of recovery
- the country is full of
starving billionaires.
- HIV and AIDS is killing thousands of our people.
- thousand are fleeing the country everyday in search of a better life elsewhere.
- there is violence being perpetrated by Zimbabweans on Zimbabweans just for the sake of votes. I thought the war of liberation was to allow every Zimbabwean freedom to speak through the ballot?
- what about those branded British puppets, are they really British puppets?

So, given all these issues and many more are we really independent Zimbabwe? Is there any reason to be celebrating under these circumstances? A few people will feast during independence celebrations whilst the majority starve.

Well done Kirsty Coventry!

Flying the Zimbabwe flag high!

For the past two weeks I have been consumed by the circus of the Zimbabwe elections. I forgot to write about one Zimbabwean who is flying the Zimbabwe flag high. Four times the Zimbabwe national athem was played in Manchester, thanks to the efforts of Kirsty Coventry the swimming sensation from Zimbabwe. Kirsty won four gold medals at the recent world swimming championships in Manchester, England.

Zimbabwe finished fourth on the medals table ahead of other countries like Britain and Russia all because of Kirsty's efforts.
At the 2004 Athens olympics she won three medals, one gold, silver and a bronze medal. And at the coming Beijing olympics she will be carrying Zimbabwe's medal hopes again.

How I wish Zimbabwe could be making full use of the positive publicity she is creating for the country!

Congratulations to Kirsty Conventry and I wish her the best in her future competions.

Zambia summit the next episode in Zimbabwe election drama

>> 11 April 2008

Is Morgan Tsvangirai now the head of state in Zimbabwe?

In the latest episode in the Zimbabwe election drama, Zambian president Mr Levy Mwanawasa the current SADC chairmen called for any emergency meeting of the heads of SADC member countries to be held in Zambia on Saturday. The emergency summit is meant to discuss the current political crisis in Zimbabwe. 12 days after the elections the results of the presidential elections have not been announced. The opposition MDC have declared Morgan Tsvangirai the winner of the elections and are calling for president Mugabe to gracefully step aside and let those mandated by the people on 29 March to lead the country.
It has been reported that president Mugabe will not be attending the summit, but will send some ministers instead. However Morgan Tsvangirai the MDC president will be attending the heads of government meeting.

We can only speculate as to why president Mugabe is not attending the SADC emergency meeting to discuss the current election circus in Zimbabwe. However we also note that sometime last year Zambian president Mr Levy Mwanawasa was quoted saying Zimbabwe is a 'sinking titanic'. Of course Zimbabwe is a country where public services are collapsing, the economy of the country is on free fall. Everything seems to be going wrong in Zimbabwe. So I think Mr Mwanawasa was right to say Zimbabwe is a sinking titanic. But is president Mugabe's failure to attend the SADC emergency meeting related to the statements made by Mr Mwanawasa on the Zimbabwe situation?

Zimbabweans have a constitutional right to decide their future, their destiny and who they want to lead the country. Which is what they did on 29 March 2008 through their votes. Now their future maybe decided somewhere in the boardroom in Lusaka, Zambia. Or is it going to be another summit where nothing comes out of it?
What hope do we have of these Southern Africa leaders resolving the political crisis in Zimbabwe?
According to a Zanu PF spokesman, by calling for this summit the Zambian president is interfering in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe. But he is the current SADC chairperson? So what's the purpose of SADC if it can not work on maintain stability in the region. What will be the purpose of SADC if it can not work to ensure the current political crisis in Zimbabwe does not threaten the economic survival of the whole Southern Africa region? So given that president Mugabe decided not to attend this summit, will anything decisive come out of this meeting? I doubt it since it seems their is no will in Zanu PF to resolve this current political crisis.

Already there are reports of violence in Zimbabwe against the opposition supporters. It is also reported that this is in preparation of the presidential election re-run and is meant to make people vote the 'right way'. But why is it that the Zimbabwean government does not want to release the results?
If president Mugabe lost the elections as most people seem to believe, so why is he so determined to remain in power?
Zimbabwe is a country were everything seems to be going wrong, their is a near total collapse of public services. The majority of the people are starving, supermarket shelves are empty, inflation is said to be over 100 000 percent, there is a very high rate of unepmloyment and even the employed are suffering with their poor wages.
So given the current state of the economy and the government's record in managing the economy, why are they still insisting that they are the best to lead the country.

Previous election results were always announced on time in Zimbabwe, so what has changed now? What is so special about this election that even the high court is delaying passing it's judgement on releasing the election results? What so special about this election that there has to be a SADC heads of government meeting to discuss the election results? What's so special about these results that even 13 days after the elections Zimbabweans still wait to hear the outcome and to know their next president?
Is anything going to be achieved at the Lusaka summit? We just hope and pray.

Zimbabwe and the elections that were never meant to happen

>> 10 April 2008

It's now 12 days after the presidential elections in Zimbabwe. Still people have no idea when the results of the presidential elections will be announced by the electoral commission. That is if they are going to announce the results at all. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai has gone to the High Court to force the electoral commission to release the results. So was this election ever meant to take place? If yes, so why are the results not being released? What is it that came out in the election results which has led the authorities in Zimbabwe not to release the results and deny the people of their choice of the next president?

A lot has been said by different people before, during and after the elections in Zimbabwe which makes me think that these elections were never meant to be. During the campaign period, the commanders of the defence forces openly said they will not salute Morgan Tsvangirai if he was elected president of Zimbabwe. You would think they would do the honourable thing and resign since they do not wish to serve the new president but NO. Their statement was meant to cause fear in people so they would vote for Robert Mugabe. So if Mugabe was the only candidate they would salute, then what was the point of having an election where there was a big chance of Morgan Tsvangirai winning? Which is what eventually happened. Does this explain why we haven't seen the election results yet?

"Zimbabwe will never be a colony again" this is something that we have heard over and over again from Zanu PF officials. The survival of Zanu and the re-election of Mugabe as president depended on the party using the land card again. Trying to fool people to believe that voting for Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC will be giving land to the white people again. They forgot the real issues affecting the Zimbabwean people. The people are hungry, they have no jobs, cost of living is very high, inflation is over 100 000 percent, there is no medication in hospitals, thousands of Zimbabweans are fleeing the country everyday.
These are the some of the issues people were thinking of when they went to vote. So when the land card did not work and the people voted so overwhelmingly for Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC was it a shock to Zanu PF? A party that has lost touch with reality. Voting for Tsvangirai and MDC was never supposed to be an option. Could this be the reason why we have not seen those election results.

"Morgan Tsvangirai, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), their supporters and anyone else who does not support and vote for Zanu PF are British puppets". Very popular statement with Zanu PF officials, supporters and it's mouth piece the Herald. So when the people of Mabvuku and Tafara who have been living with raw sewage on their door steps, (see pictures here) vote for Tsvangirai and his MDC does that make them British puppets? When all those hungry Zimbabweans, the starving billionaires say enough is enough and vote for Morgan Tsvangirai does that make them British puppets?
So if the majority of Zimbabweans voted for Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change(MDC), it means they are all British puppets. Could this explain why the Zimbabwe officials do not want to release the election results because the people have voted for a British puppet. It must be very embarrassing to the president, Zanu PF and all it's supporters.

Zanu PF is already calling for a recount of the presidential votes. How ridiculous? The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has not announced the results yet. We are still waiting. So how can they ask for a recount of something they do not know the results. If they already know the results, why is it that they have not been made public so that everyone knows? Do we have laws for Zanu PF and laws for all other citizens of Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe Electoral Commission officials have been arrested for electoral fraud, prejudicing Robert Mugabe of nearly 5000 votes. It must be very painful to lose to that British puppet Morgan Tsvangirai. Does Zanu PF have the power to delay the release of the election results while they press for a vote recount? Or is it that their rigging machine is at work, like most people believe? Is it that they lost by such a big margin that rigging is so difficult this time around?

I have nothing good to say about these misguided elements masquerading as war veterans, going about invading commercial farms and causing violence among peace loving and innocent Zimbabweans. These people are opportunists, they know nothing about how their actions are destroying whatever little was left of the country's agricultural sector. They don't seem to realise that they are part of the problem and why Zimbabwe is where it is today. How many still remember Chenjerai Hunvi. One fanatic who led the so called war veterans on a wave of violence against innocent Zimbabweans. His group of thugs were rewarded with those abnormal amounts of more printed bank notes which led to the free fall of the Zimbabwean dollar. These so called war veterans are a law unto themselves because nothing ever happens to them. They led the violent farm invasions, and according to them land re-distribution means giving land to war veterans and Zanu PF supporters. Why does every Zimbabwe got to be a supporter of Zanu PF? As for the current war veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda, he seems to jump at every opportunity to gain popularity. Read about him here

Given that Robert Mugabe, Zanu PF and it's supporters can not stand Morgan Tsvangirai being the next president of Zimbabwe does this explain why we have not seen the results of the presidential elections? Were these elections supposed to take place at all, or was it a matter of fulfilling a constitutional requirement?

Zimbabwe dollar exchange rate rising again

The exchange rate for the Zimbabwean dollar against other world currencies is on the up again. Currently it's trading at about ZW$100 million to one British pound (£1).

After the confusion and uncertainty of the last few weeks because of the elections in Zimbabwe which saw the rate going down to as low as £1 to ZW$50 million, the exchange rate has started picking up again.

With events currently taking place in the country, our Zimbabwean dollar is bound to lose more value against other currencies. Now 12 days after the presidential elections there is no sign of the results being announced.
Those misguided elements who masquerade as war veterans have started another wave of farm invasions and violence against peace loving and innocent Zimbabweans.

This will drain the life out of whatever little is left of the Zimbabwean economy. The dollar will fall even further, just wondering whether the Reserve Bank governor Mr Gono will consider removing more zeros from the dollar. Recently he introduced a new higher denomination bank note of ZW$50 million.

Zimbabweans rewarded with a new $50 million bank note

>> 09 April 2008

With inflation estimated to be way over 100 000 percent, Zimbabweans can not cope with the large number of bank notes that they have to carry around for day to day transactions. To save the people from these troubles, the reserve bank of Zimbabwe introduced a new $50 000 000.00(about 50 pence) bank note.

It has become normal for people of Zimbabwe to move around with ruck sacks and plastic bags to carry around all those loads of bank notes. That is why the 'concerned' reserve bank has introduced the new higher denomination bank note.
Banks have also increased the maximum daily cash withdrawal from $500 million to $1 Billion(about £10). Hopefully this would also help people who spend long hours queueing for cash in banks.

But is the continuous introduction of new higher denomination bank notes the solution to Zimbabwe's cash problems?
Does the reserve bank have control of the country monetary situation? They seem to have more of a reactive policy rather than being proactive policy. What could be the solution to these monetary problems in Zimbabwe?

5 ZEC officials arrested in the latest twist in Zimbabwe elections

>> 08 April 2008

This did not come as a surprise to many people. In fact there has been talk that some so called Zimbabwe Electoral Commission officials will be 'arrested', ever since Zanu PF officials started talking about Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC rigging elections. Now police spokesman Assistant commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena has confirmed that 5 ZEC officials were arrested for allegedly tempering with election results and prejudicing Zanu PF presidential candidate president Robert Mugabe of 4 993 votes.
So what is it that came out in the election results? Did the president Robert Mugabe lose so overwhelmingly to Morgan Tsvangirai of the MDC that it's so hard to accept?
If people are now being arrested and Zanu PF querying the election results, is it that they already know the results then? Even though the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has not announced the results of the recent elections.

Why is the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission not announcing the results? There is no doubt the longer they delay in releasing the results, the more the results lose credibility. Are they trying to play around with the people's vote because they did not vote in the same way they expected?

Their continued delay in releasing results has now resulted in those misguided war veterans becoming a law unto themselves. Because there is no control, these people are now going into the few commercial farms left. To destroy whatever little is left of the agricultural sector. They have found an opportunity to loot whatever little resources are left in the country.

If we assume that the MDC bribed the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission officials. The Zanu PF should now know how it feels to have your vote stolen. But there is no time for assumptions, if votes were rigged it is only by the ruling party. They have all the machinery to rig the vote in their control. Now that they failed even with such rigging they have now decided to hold on to the election results forever.

Arresting ZEC officials is just a smoke screen, they will not fool anyone. Are these desperate measures by a regime which does not want to accept that it has lost power?

These people are a disgrace to Zimbabwe

>> 07 April 2008

I know morally it's not right but dai mwari avatora. These people thrive on the suffering of other people. They have no shame, they don't care about anyone else but themselves. This is why when people say NO they always believe it's YES instead. They may have education but surely they don't know what they are doing. If there was somewhere to go, all the people in Zimbabwe would leave and leave these greedy and self centred individuals to rule themselves in Zimbabwe.
What do they have to say about all this disgrace about the so called elections in Zimbabwe? Shame on them!

Everyone know who rig elections in Zimbabwe. Why do these people take all Zimbabweans like fools? We have one confused individual who is afforded time by international television stations trying to defend the impossible. Surely his time shall come, nothing lasts forever.

Then we have these misguided and uneducated people, they like to call themselves war veterans. They think they are a law unto themselves because time and time again they have been allowed to do so. They still live in the past, they may have fought the war of liberation, but not to hold the other Zimbabweans to ransom because they went to war. Our mothers and sisters were cooking for them. In fact some of us where not even old enough to go to war, so where not even born so they should not impose on us how we should live.
They misguided elements are just trying to take advantage of another opportunity to make money out of a desperate regime that will use any means available to remain in power.

Who in their senses would want a recount of election results they don't even know. Crazy! They want us to believe that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is an independent body, so if that's the case how come Zanu PF already know the results of the presidential elections? If they don't know the results already so why do they want a recount?............ pure madness.

Now 9 days after the people of Zimbabwe went to vote, there is no sign of the presidential election results. So what was the point of having elections at all? Is there any credibility left in these elections? These people have disgraced and tarnished the image of Zimbabwe because of their obsession to remain in power at all cost.

Why is it these people do not want to let go? What is it that is very important with them that they think Zimbabwe would want them to rule until amen? Is it because they have managed the economy so well that Zimbabweans are living the best life that they would ever dream of?

In fact:
1. Zimbabwe has the highest inflation rate in the would
2. There is no foreign currency
3. There is no fuel
4. There is a shortage of basic commodities
5. Dead health delivery system, no medication in hospitals.
6. High rate of unemployment
7. Corruption is now part of life
8. Infrastructure is falling apart
9. Zimbabweans are fleeing the country everyday because of these problems.
10. The wishes of the people are not respected because of a few individuals
11. The highest denomination bank note is $50 million, crazy! it will not even buy you a chicken.

I would go on and on, is this a country well managed by the Zanu PF government like they want us to believe? If you highlight these problems they say you are a British puppet! Give us a break!
Now they are using the land issue again. But their time will surely come.

Glory be to God.

A country of starving billionaires

>> 05 April 2008

Sad!

Wonder if anyone can explain how Zimbabwe came to this? Zimbabwe has been led by a Zanu PF government which is proud of it's performance and management of the country's economy. But the people say the Zanu PF government has ruined the economy where as on the other hand the government says they are puppets of the west.
Now the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has rewarded the people of Zimbabwe with a new $50 000 000.00 bank note to reduce the number of notes they have to carry around.

We have people like that deputy minister of information who takes advantage of every opportunity he gets to dish to us more of his usual rubbish. People of Zimbabwe know what they want. There are many starving billionaires in Zimbabwe not because of Morgan Tsvangirai, not because of western governments, not because of the ordinary Zimbabweans, but because of the same government he is trying to defend.

The Banana Republic of Zimbabwe

They have no shame! For years the majority of Zimbabweans have lived a life of poverty. Some have seen their lives, careers and their dreams destroyed by the dictatorial regime that rules in Zimbabwe.
There has always been a lot of fraud and vote rigging in previous elections, and finally when Zanu PF has been defeated overwhelmingly by the opposition the dictatorial regime is now doing everything in it's power to remain in power.

The people of Zimbabwe have spoken through the ballot, they no longer want to be led by a Zanu PF government. So why is Zanu PF fighting so hard to remain in power?
If people no longer want them, why do they have to force people to like them? What is it that is so special with them?

Everyone knows their contribution to Zimbabwe during the war of liberation. But did they fight the war so they can then oppress the people of Zimbabwe themselves. Zimbabwe will never be a colony again! They shout!
But we will forever be held to ransom for that. Heroes day is held to celebrate the good work that the real war veterans did for Zimbabwe. Not these current crop of greedy war veterans who are determined to destroy whatever little of Zimbabwe is left.

The other day the Zanu PF was accusing the MDC of rigging the elections. How ridiculous? Who controls all the rigging machinery in Zimbabwe?

Now those misguided elements, so called war veterans and Zanu PF militias are getting ready to cause more trouble. We know Jabulani Sibanda (the same Sibanda who was humiliated at the last Zanu PF conference) wants to be the next Chenjerai Hunzvi. These war veterans see another opportunity to get money from the state like they did in 1999, when they caused trouble led by Hunzvi and forced the government to print more money to compensate them.
Will our collapsing economy manage another round of printing money?

Why are the so called war veterans saying white farmers are going back in to the farms? Who are they fooling? They are just positioning themselves to get money from the government. Real war veterans do not hold the country to ransom by making these ridiculous demands.

There day of judgement will surely come, the people of Zimbabwe continue to suffer and if they make a statement by voting for the opposition. The government accuse them of being puppets of the west. If people are not happy with the current state of the economy when there are shortages of nearly everything, does that make them puppets of the state.
Can Zimbabwe survive another 5 years of Zanu PF government?

Mugabe to chair Zanu PF meeting to discuss Zimbabwe's elections

>> 03 April 2008

Zanu PF politburo will have a meeting on Friday to discuss Zimbabwe's elections. Zanu PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa is said to have confirmed that there will be a politburo meeting on Friday. He declined to comment on whether Zanu PF was planning for a runoff between Mugabe and MDC's Morgan Tsvangirai.

People are becoming more and more frustrated with the delay in announcing the much awaited Zimbabwe presidential election results.
The Zimbabwe Election Commission began announcing the results of the senatorial elections which should be announced before the presidential elections are announced. In the senatorial election results confirmed so far it's neck to neck with Morgan Tsangirai's MDC on 5 seats and Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF 5 seats.

As the Zanu PF politburo is set to meet Friday to discuss about the outcome of the recent elections, what does the future hold for Zimbabwe?

MDC claim win in Zimbabwe Presidential elections

>> 02 April 2008

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) secretary general Tendai Biti announced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the opposition party had defeated Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF in both the Presidential and parliamentary elections.
Tendai Biti told the press conference in Harare that based on the results posted outside polling stations, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirayi won 50.3 percent of the vote and Robert Mugabe 43.8 percent of the vote.

However Zanu PF's Bright Matonga described MDC victory claims as "mischievous" and he also said that Mugabe is going nowhere.

The delay by the Electoral Commission in announcing the all important Presidential results is causing more anxiety, anger and testing the patience of Zimbabweans. Why is it that they are taking their time in giving people the results they have been waiting for?
The delay has raised suspicions of vote rigging. The pattern in which results have are being announced as if they are sharing sweets to kids has not helped the situation at all.

So are we headed for a Presidential re-run? Like the state run Herald newspaper seems to suggest. Other independent sources also seem to suggest a re-run. MDC secretary general Tendai Biti told a press conference that his party would accept a re-run, but under protest since they believe Morgan Tsvangirayi won the elections.

I think an election re-run will not be good for our economy. With the current problems we are currently experiencing in the country, this election re-run will destroy whatever little is left of the country.
What are your views on what is happening in Zimbabwe at the moment? Is the MDC right to announce the results of the elections? What effect if any do you think the election re-run will have on the economy? Do you think Mugabe has rigged the elections again?

Rumours of a deal between Morgan Tsvangirayi and Robert Mugabe

>> 01 April 2008

Breaking News: Deal for Mugabe to transfer power to Morgan Tsvangirayi

There is news coming from Harare that there are talks taking place between Morgan Tsvangirayi of MDC and Robert Mugabe of Zanu PF. The deal involves Robert Mugabe making an announcement on national television that he is going to step aside and transfer power to Morgan Tsvangirayi. The deal also seem to have been confirmed by a US State Department official after being in contact with the MDC officials.
The sources from the opposition say a deal is nearly done but are urging caution. However it is also said that Zanu's deputy information minister Bright Matonga has said there is no such deal and talks going on. All we can do is wait and see as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission are taking their time with results which is now causing anger in people.

People are very angry with how this election results business has been handled. The electoral commission has been releasing results very slow which has caused anxiety, confusion and anger in people.

Election results have been in the public domain ever since they were posted at various polling stations. So people already know the results, which seem to point at a victory for Morgan Tsvangirayi and MDC.
These are the results which have been available on the Internet all along. These are the results which people seem to be blaming some MDC officials for releasing the results which now seem to be different from what the Electoral Commission is now announcing.

But why are people so quick to agree with what the Electoral Commission is announcing. The whole electoral system in Zimbabwe is not something that can be trusted just like that.
But I understand people are fade up with the current situation in Zimbabwe. They are desperate for change thus the longer the results are delayed the more confusion is created.

Rumours or no rumours it is most likely that it's true there is a meeting taking place between MDC and Zanu PF. The results show an overwhelming win for MDC.
Again there was supposed to be a press conference by Morgan Tsvangirayi scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, which was postponed more than once which shows that something definitely is happening behind the scenes.

But what is it?

Who is involved in that meeting and what are they talking about? Sources seem to suggest we are not very far from knowing the truth. But this is Zimbabwe, anything is possible. Until anything is signed we will urge caution, keep fingers crossed.

Special Kudo's to ZimnetRadio, they have been keeping me entertained.
