Zimbabwe Exodus: Escaping the Crisis

>> 31 July 2007

It was disturbing watching the video on Sky News about Zimbabweans trying to ileagally cross into South Africa. These individuals were surely showing signs of the crisis they were running away from. These people take great risks to escape poverty back in Zimbabwe. The report also shows white farmers in South Africa turning themselves into a police force, asking every black person they see for a passport.

This story highlights a lot of things which should be addressed; these 'arrested' Zimbabweans had no idea these people are not police personnel and they do not even have the power to do what they are doing. Hands tied, they were bundled into trucks. These illegal Zimbabweans were most probably not even on these people's farmlands.
And the only reason I got for what these farmers are acting as a police force is that these Zimbabweans are destroying there fences trying to kill game animals?

These people seems to have the same reasons on why they would want to run away from Zimbabwe. Hunger through years of below average rainfalls, policies which distroyed the backbone of the country (agriculture). Again most of these people come from the mostly dry southern parts of the country, were nearly nothing is harvested year in year out. They would require assistance with food and water to survive and this help does not seem to be there either.

Different factors have also contributed in destroying the economic system. People can no longer survive by going to work where the monthly earnings are not enough to cover for the transport costs. So many people join the job market every year where there are no jobs at all. Companies are clossing down, so thats why these people risk their lives to go to South Africa. They need to survive.

The Zimbabwean Dollar has no value at all. Even with the price controls things are not getting any better. There is nothing to buy with those bearer cheques.

Operation Slash Price - Price Freeze

>> 20 July 2007

Operation! Operation! Operation! welcome to the land of operations.

Yes yet another 'Operation', yet more problems. Welcome to the country of operations.

Years back I had of Operation Chinyavada, this was targeted at women in pubs. Most were rounded up and taken to a farm far away from town, probably so they could work instead of drinking beer. I'm told this caused a drop in beer sales and soon the women were back in pubs and everyone lived happily ever after.

A couple of months ago, we had Operation Murambatsvina aimed at making the country cleaner. This was similar to one operation which saw families bundled into trucks in the middle of the night sometime from Mbare Musika because we had special visitors coming. Who would want to show that ugly side of things to special visitors. This again created more problems than solutions. But I would say the country is a bit cleaner though.
But who encouranged people to build those 'Tangwena house' as they were populaly
known.

There was 'Operation Garikai' meant to give better accomodation to those affected by operation Murambatsvina. If this was a success then the people will testify. What I know is this pushed house prices up both for rentals and to buy. Just ask my fellow lodgers.

Then there was also Operation Maguta (meant to bring enough food on the table). Remember we are talking of the bread busket of Africa here. The country used to produce enough for everyone, and enough to export to our neighbouring brothers. A lot has happened over the years.
Was 'Operation Maguta' a success? Let the people will testify.

Now 'Operation Slash Prices',a price freeze. As if not enough, business still have to reduce the current prices. Well this may help, because (zvanga zvanyanya) it was getting out of hand, that is if you belive it was already in the hand.
Well I think business has also responded with their own operation,
'OPERATION EMPTY SHELVES'.

If all these operations were not a success, why do we still have all these operations coming. Did the price freeze make things better? Are things going to get better? Yes dora rave kutenga, but uno tenga mhepo here?

So what will be the next operation.
